About the Location
Park Overview
Found on Bethel Street, Cosmo-Bethel Park spans 40 acres of green space with a variety of features for all ages. Sitting right next to Gentry Middle School, this park manages to blend recreational fun with natural beauty in a way that draws visitors of all ages.
The park has been around since 1971 and later got its name as a tip of the hat to the Columbia Cosmopolitan Luncheon Club for their contributions. Over the years, it's evolved quite a bit and offers clean grounds, ample parking, and a comfortable atmosphere for families.
Water Features
If you're into fishing, you're in luck! The park's 6-acre lake is a year-round hotspot for anglers. Winter brings a special treat when the lake gets stocked with trout, and if the ice is thick enough, you can even try your hand at ice fishing. Throughout the rest of the year, you might reel in some largemouth bass, catfish, or bluegill.
Feel like a stroll? The 0.46-mile lakeside trail offers a smooth, paved path meant for an easy walk while soaking in the peaceful surroundings. You might spot swans and ducks gliding across the water - they're regular residents of the lake. The sunset views over the lake can be quite nice from many vantage points in the park.
Sports Facilities
Tennis, anyone? The park shares a 12-court tennis complex with Columbia Public Schools, including eight courts with lights for evening matches. It's a nice balance that serves both the public and school needs without feeling overcrowded.
Beyond tennis, you'll come across a baseball/softball practice field, sand volleyball court, basketball courts, and even horseshoe pits for those who enjoy a more traditional pastime. The open fields scattered throughout give you plenty of space to toss a frisbee or kick a ball around without bumping into others.
Playground
The playground here is a real highlight for families. The playground features a three-story climbing structure with multiple slides that children enjoy year-round. Add in swings, a kids challenge course, and large climbing tires, and you've got a recipe for hours of fun.
While younger children tend to use it most, the playground is spacious enough to accommodate about 40 kids at once comfortably. Parents will appreciate that it's set back from any roads, and there are plenty of seating areas with good sightlines for keeping an eye on the little ones.
Amenities
The park offers several picnic shelters that you can reserve, complete with lighting and electrical outlets. The largest pavilion can accommodate over 50 people and comes equipped with grills for cookouts.
Restrooms are available from mid-April through mid-October, with porta-potties filling in during the off-season. You can find ADA drinking fountains throughout, and the park does a good job with accessibility in general, including a handicap-accessible walking trail.
As you wander the grounds, you might notice several memorial trees with plaques at their bases. These were donated in memory of loved ones, adding a thoughtful, poignant touch to your walk.
Natural Setting
Beyond the facilities, Cosmo-Bethel provides a peaceful green space with shade trees, open meadows, and quiet corners. The park balances developed recreational areas with natural spaces.
Whether you want to exercise, bring the kids to play, go fishing, or simply read under a tree, Cosmo-Bethel Park is a popular spot for local families throughout the year.
