Natural Features
Grindstone Nature Area is a 199-acre park located in southeast Columbia, Missouri. The park features a diverse landscape of woods, open fields, bluffs, and creeks. Grindstone Creek runs through the middle of the property, while Hinkson Creek forms part of the park's boundary.
Wildlife and native plants are abundant in the park. Visitors can observe a variety of birds and animals, especially in the park's prairie areas where wildflowers grow. The park's diverse ecosystems, from woodlands to grasslands, provide habitats for many species.
Trail Network
The park offers over 5 miles of nature trails, including both paved and natural surface paths. A 1.8-mile section of the concrete Hinkson Creek Trail passes through the park, connecting it to other areas of Columbia. An additional 4.2 miles of limestone trails and 5.2 miles of dirt trails wind through the park's varied terrain.
Special Features
Grindstone Nature Area is notable for its off-leash dog area, which encompasses most of the park except for the Hinkson Creek Trail. This makes it a popular destination for dog owners.
The park also contains remnants of the area's agricultural past, including a historic silo and spring house.
Access Information
The park can be accessed from two main entrances - one off Old Highway 63 South and another off Rock Quarry Road. Parking is available at both locations.
