About the Location

Natural Features

Situated in southeast Columbia, Missouri, Grindstone Nature Area spans 199 acres of diverse landscape that feels removed from the city. As you explore, you'll discover yourself wandering through woods, open fields, impressive bluffs, and meandering creeks. Grindstone Creek cuts right through the heart of the property, while Hinkson Creek traces part of the park's boundary.

The park is teeming with wildlife and native plants. Keep your eyes peeled for birds and small animals, especially in the prairie areas where wildflowers create splashes of color throughout the growing seasons. From dense woodlands to open grasslands, these varied ecosystems create perfect habitats for many species, making this an ideal spot for wildlife viewing if you're patient and observant.

Trail Network

With over 5 miles of nature trails to discover, you can choose your own adventure at Grindstone. The 1.8-mile paved Hinkson Creek Trail offers a smooth, accessible path through the park and connects to Columbia's broader trail system. If you're looking for something more natural, there are an additional 4.2 miles of limestone trails and 5.2 miles of dirt paths that meander through the park's varied terrain.

The trail signage could use some improvement in spots, but the variety of paths means there's something for everyone - if you're out for a casual stroll or seeking a more challenging hike. The Grindstone Creek Trail is particularly lovely, but be aware that during dry spells, parts of the creek might be completely dry.

Special Features

Dog owners, rejoice! Grindstone Nature Area boasts an extensive off-leash dog area that covers most of the park (except for the Hinkson Creek Trail). It's a rare treat to find such a large natural space where your four-legged friends can run freely and explore.

History buffs might appreciate the remnants of the area's agricultural past, including a weathered silo and old spring house that remain from the land's farming days. If you're curious and look carefully, you might even spot fossils in the creek beds - silent storytellers of the land's ancient past.

Amenities

Near the trailhead, you can find a picnic shelter with several tables - well-suited for a post-hike lunch or a peaceful outdoor meal. One particularly convenient feature is the availability of clean restrooms year-round at the Grindstone trailhead, something that's surprisingly rare during winter months at many parks.

Despite being within city limits, the urban world fades away quickly once you're on the trails. The sounds of traffic give way to rustling leaves and birdsong, creating a genuine escape without having to travel far.

Access Information

You can enter the park from two main points - one off Old Highway 63 South and another off Rock Quarry Road. Both entrances offer parking, however on beautiful weekends these lots can fill up quickly. If you arrive to find a full lot, try the Capen Park parking area instead, which connects to the same network of trails.
