About the Location

Ecological Purpose

Found in Columbia, Missouri, the 3M Flat Branch-Hinkson Creek Wetlands is both a scenic park and an important environmental project. Spanning 26.2 acres, this thoughtfully designed wetland area works tirelessly to filter pollutants from stormwater runoff from about 140 acres of urban landscape. It functions essentially as a natural water treatment facility, processing approximately 10 million gallons of water.

This green area didn't just appear overnight. It took the combined efforts of seventeen agency partners and a generous grant from 3M to bring this project to life, all with the goal of helping Hinkson Creek recover from the impact of urban development.

Trails and Learning Opportunities

Feel like stretching your legs? The wetlands feature a 1.25-mile gravel loop trail that conveniently connects to the beloved MKT Trail. The path accommodates both casual walkers and cyclists through this restored ecosystem.

As you wander, you'll encounter 24 interpretive signs that tell the story of the wetlands and their ecological importance. Each sign includes QR codes you can scan to listen to the information instead of reading - well-suited for those who prefer audio learning or want to keep their eyes on the scenery.

If you're into birdwatching, you're in for a treat. The area is known as a "hot spot" for bird sightings. The diversity of feathered residents makes this stretch of trail feel wonderfully wild despite being so carefully maintained.

Unique Features

An interesting feature of this park is how it repurposes the past. The old sewer treatment pumphouse has been transformed into a green-roofed viewing platform complete with picnic tables. It's a thoughtful example of adaptive reuse - transforming a utilitarian structure into a spot where you can enjoy a meal while observing the wetland views and wildlife.

The quiet is notable here. Despite its proximity to the city, the wetlands offer a peaceful atmosphere that provides a natural retreat.

Accessibility

The wetlands can be accessed through multiple points that connect with Columbia's layout. The connection to the MKT Trail system allows for foot and bike access within the urban environment.
