Peace Park

A Glimpse of History and Tranquility

Nestled on the northern edge of the University of Missouri (MU) campus, Peace Park is Columbia's little green haven with a powerful story. Officially named McAlester Park (after the adjacent hall), this spot has transformed from just another campus green space into something with real soul and purpose.

Peace Park got its nickname following the Kent State Massacre of May 4, 1970, and features a touching memorial to those who lost their lives. Over the years, it's become Columbia's go-to place for everything from quiet contemplation to peaceful activism. You'll find it hosting yearly Earth Day festivals and community gatherings, including musical performances supporting local organizations like The Center Project.

Nature's Touch

Goose Creek winds its way through the park, adding that perfect water element that just makes everything more peaceful. On warm days, you'll spot kids splashing in the shallow waters - one of those simple joys that never gets old.

Crossing the creek is a charming stone bridge that's become part of campus folklore. Legend has it that couples who cross it together are destined to marry - making it a subtly romantic spot for university students brave enough to test the theory.

As part of the Mizzou Botanic Garden, the park doubles as an arboretum showcasing more than 100 trees across 43 species. It's like a living museum of Mid-Missouri's diverse plant life and works as a natural classroom for those interested in environmental education.

Small Park, Big Personality

Though compact, Peace Park doesn't skimp on comfort with numerous benches scattered throughout. While there aren't designated picnic tables, the open grassy areas are great for spreading a blanket and enjoying some snacks for an impromptu outdoor meal.

Dog lovers, rejoice - the park is dog-friendly, so you can bring your leashed four-legged friends along. You'll regularly see locals walking their dogs or simply taking a moment to breathe amid the greenery.

Peace Park is both a pretty space and a living connection to Columbia's social and cultural identity. From its roots in the anti-war movement to its continuing role as a venue for celebrations and demonstrations, this little park carries both beauty and significance.

Its location between downtown Columbia and Mizzou's campus makes it a great pit stop between city life and academic pursuits. With shops and restaurants just a stone's throw away, many people grab takeout from nearby spots to enjoy in the park's calm atmosphere.

Today, this peaceful retreat remains a popular weekend meetup spot, a breather for downtown shoppers, and a treasured green space for students, faculty, and locals alike.
