About the Location
From Coal Mines to Cool Times
Finger Lakes State Park sits on 1,128 acres of what used to be a coal strip-mining site. It's pretty amazing how this once-industrial landscape has been transformed into a natural playground for all sorts of outdoor enthusiasts.
Water Wonderland
The park's most eye-catching feature has to be its system of finger-shaped lakes, remnants of the old mining pits. These interconnected waterways stretch about a mile and a half along the eastern edge of the park, forming a watery maze for exploration.
You can dive right in with swimming, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, and - for the more adventurous - scuba diving. When the weather heats up, the sand swimming beach with its change house provides a nice spot to cool off.
Navigating the finger lakes is a breeze thanks to buoy-marked water trails. Don't have your own boat? Kayaks, canoes, and paddle boards are available to rent at reasonable prices.
Dirt, Dust, and Adrenaline
If you're into motorized adventure, Finger Lakes is one of only two Missouri state parks that welcome ATVs and off-road motorcycles. With over 70 miles of trails cutting through rugged terrain, there's something for everyone from cautious beginners to daredevil experts.
For those who crave even more excitement, the park's motocross track hosts occasional races and offers a space to practice your jumps and turns. Younger riders aren't left out either, with dedicated children's motocross areas available.
The trails range from fast and flowy to technical and challenging. Just a heads up - after rain, the clay soil can turn into some seriously sticky mud. It's all part of the experience.
Human-Powered Fun
Not into motors? The 2.75-mile Kelley Branch Mountain Bike Trail offers a challenging route for cyclists looking to test their skills. Hikers can also enjoy the park's paths, with plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife or simply soak in the peaceful surroundings.
If you're the exploring type, you might stumble upon some hidden treasures, like the small waterfall tucked away on the south end of the yellow trail.
Sleep Under the Stars
Want to extend your stay? The campground offers both basic and electric sites with modern restrooms, hot showers, and nicely spaced, shaded campsites. Many campers note that this campground is relatively quiet, especially in the second loop by the camp host.
Day-trippers can take advantage of the shaded picnic area in the park's center - a peaceful spot to recharge and refuel.
The Little Things
The facilities, including restrooms and shower houses, are well-maintained. For added peace of mind, the campground uses a gate code system.
Your four-legged friends are welcome in most areas of the park (on leash, of course), but you'll need to leave them behind when hitting the beach or swimming areas.
Something for Everyone
What makes Finger Lakes State Park interesting is its variety of activities. Whether you're on the motocross track, paddling through the finger lakes, or fishing, there are many ways to enjoy the outdoors here.
What was once an industrial site has been transformed into a diverse recreation area, showing how altered landscapes can be repurposed.
