About the Location
Natural Oasis
Tucked away south of Russell Boulevard Elementary School, Kiwanis Park offers a peaceful 20-acre escape where nature still reigns supreme. This heavily wooded retreat manages to feel miles away from city life while staying conveniently central to Columbia.
With its rolling hills and dense forest canopy, the park invites you to wander its 0.9 miles of dirt and gravel trails. These paths are just long enough to feel immersed in nature but short enough that even the littlest hikers in your family can manage them without too much complaint.
Bringing Back the Natives
The park has recently undergone something of an ecological makeover. Invasive honeysuckle has been cleared out to make room for native trees and shrubs. This isn't just about aesthetics - these restoration efforts are helping rebuild the natural ecosystem and inviting more birds back into the neighborhood.
Places to Gather
Need a spot for your next family reunion or birthday celebration? Kiwanis offers two large reservable shelters complete with electricity and nearby parking. Picnic tables surround these shelters, creating natural gathering spaces for community events.
For those who believe food tastes better outdoors, BBQ pits near the picnic areas let you cook up a proper feast while enjoying the park's tranquil setting.
Restrooms can be found on the west side of the park and are typically open from April through mid-October. They're clean, single-stall facilities, and portable toilets provide backup options when needed.
A water fountain stands ready to quench your thirst after exploring the trails or playing in the park.
If you're looking for more structured recreation, head over to the adjacent Russell Boulevard Elementary School grounds, where you can find a basketball court, playground, and an intriguing outdoor classroom.
Finding Your Way In
The park welcomes visitors through two main entrances - one off College Park Drive and another off Maplewood Drive - so you can easily access the park from different directions.
Bring Your Four-Legged Friends
Your dogs are welcome throughout Kiwanis Park, provided they stay leashed. The trails offer a wonderful setting for a leisurely walk with your furry companion, but do remember to bring bags to clean up after them.
What makes Kiwanis Park special is its understated charm - it's not flashy or filled with elaborate amenities, but rather offers a genuine slice of nature with just enough facilities to make your visit comfortable. If you're seeking solitude among the trees or a green space for a family picnic, this little woodland haven is a good option.
