About the Location
Natural Landscape
Located in Columbia, Proctor Park is a seven-acre wooded sanctuary that feels worlds away from city life. It sits just south of Garth Nature Area, with the gentle flow of Bear Creek creating a natural boundary between the two parks.
The park offers a modest 0.2-mile nature trail that loops through tranquil woods before leading you down to Bear Creek. It's excellent for those days when you want a quick nature fix without committing to a lengthy hike. The creek itself is a bit of a tranquil space - we've seen plenty of four-legged visitors having the time of their lives splashing around in the water!
Amenities
Don't expect playground equipment or sports facilities here - Proctor Park embraces its rustic, undeveloped character. You can find a picnic table nestled in an open grassy clearing, making it an ideal spot for a peaceful lunch surrounded by nature's soundtrack.
Note that there are no restrooms available, so you'll want to plan accordingly and bring water and other essentials with you.
History
The park has been providing natural respite since 1960, when L.T. Proctor generously donated the land to Columbia. His gift continues to provide a space for community enjoyment and natural conservation more than six decades later.
Connectivity
What makes Proctor Park special is how it connects with Bear Creek and sits close to the Garth Nature Area, creating an extended natural playground for outdoor enthusiasts. It's also conveniently located about half a mile from the local recycling center.
The park's compact size makes it a wonderful alternative when you're not up for tackling larger parks. It's intimate and manageable - well-suited for a quick outdoor escape without having to navigate crowds or cover long distances. Some visitors come specifically for creek-side activities like hunting for interesting rocks along the water's edge.
Current Conditions
We should mention that some recent visitors have noted litter issues in parts of the park. While the city works on maintenance, the somewhat secluded location can make upkeep challenging.
Even with these occasional issues, Proctor Park remains a beautiful pocket of calm within Columbia - a small but mighty natural retreat where you can clear your head and reconnect with nature without venturing far from the city.
