About Smith Park
Park Overview
Nestled in the heart of Springfield, Missouri, Smith Park spreads across 50 acres of verdant landscape. Since 1935, this community treasure has been bringing locals together in a space that beautifully blends recreation with natural serenity.
Jordan Creek meanders through the grounds, crossed by charming bridges that add a touch of whimsy to the landscape. There's something genuinely calming about this place - with plenty of green space to spread out a blanket, catch your breath, or just watch the clouds drift by.
A Glimpse into the Past
Smith Park has quite the backstory. It sits along Jordan Creek, just north of what was once Glenstone Golf Course. When World War II shifted America's priorities in 1941, the neighboring golf course was sold to the federal government to build O'Reilly General Army Hospital.
Though the park board initially held onto Smith Park, by 1942 the U.S. Army had condemned and taken over the land to serve as a recreation area for the hospital. It wasn't until 1954 that the city was able to buy back this cherished green space for $20,000 - a decision that generations of Springfield residents have benefited from.
Get Moving or Kick Back
Whether you're looking to break a sweat or simply enjoy the outdoors, Smith Park offers plenty of options. The Jordan Creek Greenway connects the park to nearby Silver Springs Park and extends to Jordan Valley Park, creating a network of recreational possibilities.
Sports enthusiasts will appreciate the basketball court, tennis courts, and baseball fields distributed around the grounds. There are also soccer fields excellent for impromptu games or team practices.
If you're in the mood for a workout, check out the strength training bars positioned around the park. While there are nice walking areas, keep in mind that the paved paths don't connect throughout the entire park, so you might find yourself cutting across the grass at points.
What You'll Find Here
Smith Park has amenities for visitors of all ages. The playground areas feature swings, slides, and climbing equipment that children will love. Parents of toddlers will appreciate the padded playground section that's great for little ones still mastering their balance.
Planning a gathering? The large pavilion with its many tables can be reserved through the city park system. Within the park, you'll discover picnic tables in scenic spots, some complemented by fire pits for those who want to grill up some lunch.
A heads-up about practical matters: restrooms are typically only open when someone has rented the pavilion, and water fountains are limited. First-time visitors might find the parking situation a bit puzzling, so we recommend allowing a few extra minutes to get oriented.
The park sits right next to the Boys & Girls Club of Springfield - Stalnaker Unit, making it a convenient extension of their youth programs.
Natural Delights
The park's setting along Jordan Creek creates a small haven for local wildlife. Keep your eyes peeled for groundhogs and other critters that call this place home.
The creek itself is a highlight, with bridges offering picturesque views of the water below. Towering mature trees spread their canopies across the park, providing welcome shade during Missouri's warmer months.
