About Doling Park
A Park With Roots
Nestled in north Springfield, Doling Park spans a generous 56 acres and carries with it stories from as far back as 1883. That's when James Marshall Doling first claimed this land, which included the intriguing Giboney Cave that still fascinates visitors today.
Imagine this place in the early 1900s - a bustling private amusement park complete with roller skating, dancing, a bandstand, ball fields, a penny arcade, and even boats gliding across Doling Lake. It must have been quite the weekend destination!
From Then to Now
In 1929, the Springfield-Greene County Park Board took ownership of this special place. While the carnival-like attractions eventually faded away, the skating rink remained a community favorite well into the 1960s.
Today, Doling Park has evolved into something new yet familiar - a recreational space that honors its colorful past while offering plenty for modern park-goers.
What You'll Find Here
The park is home to the Doling Family Center, where you can hit the gym, join fitness classes, or participate in various programs. If swimming is more your style, the Doling Indoor Aquatic Center offers year-round splashing with water slides that are just as fun for adults as they are for kids.
History buffs will appreciate the Doling Park Museum housed in the former skating rink. It's filled with memorabilia that tells the story of this Springfield landmark through the decades.
Planning a gathering? The park offers plenty of picnic areas with tables and BBQ grills, including a large pavilion that's meant for family reunions, birthday celebrations, or community events.
Natural Beauty
One of the park's retreats is Doling Lake, encircled by a paved trail that's excellent for a leisurely stroll. While Giboney Cave isn't always open to the public, guided tours do happen occasionally - worth keeping an eye out for if you're curious about what lies beneath.
A gentle stream flows from the cave into the pond, creating a tranquil soundtrack as you explore. If you pause for a moment, you might spot fish darting through the water or turtles sunning themselves on rocks. The local ducks and geese also add character to the scene.
Across the park, you'll wander through open meadows, find refuge under the shade of mature trees, and encounter rolling hills that make each visit a little adventure.
Get Moving
Active visitors will find tennis courts (lit for evening matches), basketball courts, baseball fields, and a modern playground that caters to children of different ages.
The paved trails that wind through the grounds are ideal for walking, jogging, or taking your four-legged friend for a walk (just remember to bring a leash).
If you're focused on fitness, check out the outdoor fitness stations or head inside to the Family Center, which offers programs for everyone from teenagers to seniors.
Community Heart
Beyond its facilities, Doling Park is a social spot where the Springfield community gathers for events and programs year-round.
The senior center within the Doling Family Center provides activities, classes, and meals for older adults in the area.
