About the Location

A Step Back in Time on a City Hilltop

Perched on one of St. Louis's highest points since 1867, this 35.8-acre park offers impressive city views and a glimpse of living history with room to breathe.

The park's crown jewel is undoubtedly the Compton Hill Water Tower. Standing 179 feet tall, this Romanesque beauty from 1899 isn't just pretty to look at - it once had the crucial job of equalizing water pressure throughout the city. Designed by Harvey Ellis, it's now a historic landmark where you can climb all 198 steps on select tour days. The panoramic views of St. Louis reward your climb, especially as the sun sets over the city skyline.

Far From Just Water Storage

Next to the tower sits a large reservoir that still plays an essential role in St. Louis's water supply. The reservoir wall, designed by Guy Study, features elegant steps and wall fountains that might make you feel like you've stumbled into an Italian garden. Two bronze tablets on the west wall tell the story of this engineering marvel for history buffs.

While tennis courts once covered the reservoir's concrete roof until World War II, the new courts nearby still draw plenty of players. You'll often spot locals squeezing in a match after work as the day cools down. The elevated position of this area also offers a unique perspective of the surroundings that's hard to find elsewhere in the city.

A Place to Play and Unwind

Beyond its historical significance, the park offers plenty of ways to enjoy the outdoors. Paved walking trails wind through grassy picnic areas, while a playground keeps the little ones entertained with slides and climbing equipment.

Dog owners in the neighborhood maintain a members-only dog park where local pups can socialize off-leash. Not a member? No problem - the park's trails are ideal for on-leash walks with your four-legged friend, with conveniently placed trash cans for cleanup.

The grounds are notably well-kept, with trees providing welcome shade during summer and displaying beautiful autumn colors.

Where Art Meets Open Space

In front of a small lily-adorned pond sits "The Naked Truth", a striking sculpture that adds an artistic touch to the natural landscape. During warmer months, the pond comes alive with blooming water lilies that add splashes of color to the scene.

History enthusiasts will appreciate the marker detailing German immigration to St. Louis, while architecture buffs might notice the park's unique structural elements that create an almost otherworldly feeling in certain spots.

The park works as both a pleasant space and a community gathering place. Its convenient location near South Grand Boulevard's restaurant scene makes it ideal for walking off a meal or getting some exercise in the fresh air.

Natural Retreat in the City

What we appreciate about this park is how it feels removed from city life despite being right in the middle of it. The elevation creates a natural lookout point, while the greenery provides a peaceful escape from urban noise.

The small lake near the water tower has become a favorite quiet spot for contemplation. With benches thoughtfully placed across the grounds, you can easily find your own corner to sit and take in the atmosphere of this historic urban oasis.
