About the Location
History and Namesake
Gwen B. Giles Park was originally established in 1959 as Catalpa Park. It was renamed in 1986 to honor Gwen B. Giles, the first African American woman to serve in the Missouri Senate and the first woman and first African American to be appointed St. Louis city assessor.

In the past, the park featured unique playground equipment, including a wooden fortress, cannons, and a concrete seal, which were popular attractions for children. However, these historic structures have since been removed.
