Located in western St. Louis, Forest Park is a vast urban escape spanning 1,326 acres - yes, that's even bigger than New York City's Central Park! Opened on June 24, 1876, this verdant sanctuary came to life just as America was celebrating its centennial, which feels rather poetic when you think about it.

When St. Louis Took Center Stage

If these trees could talk, they'd tell tales of the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition (World's Fair) and the 1904 Summer Olympics that unfolded right here on these grounds. As you wander through the park today, you'll spot historical markers that whisper stories of these monumental events that shaped not just the park, but St. Louis itself.

Culture Without Breaking the Bank

One of the most remarkable things about Forest Park is how it houses five major cultural powerhouses: the St. Louis Zoo, the St. Louis Art Museum, the Missouri History Museum, the St. Louis Science Center, and the Muny amphitheater. The zoo, art museum, history museum, and science center all offer free admission - making incredible educational experiences accessible to everyone, regardless of budget.

The park unfolds like a painting - meadows stretch into the distance, trees create cool canopies, and various ponds and lakes reflect the changing sky. It's not uncommon to share your morning jog with squirrels, various birds, and occasionally even deer. In recent years, restoration projects have created beautiful prairie and wetland areas that not only help control flooding but have invited an even greater diversity of wildlife to call this urban oasis home.

Get Moving or Just Relax

Regardless of whether you're looking to break a sweat or simply unwind, Forest Park has options for both. You can tee off at the golf courses, rally on the tennis courts, or explore miles of paths on foot or bike. The Dual Path system cleverly separates casual strollers from more determined exercisers. If water's more your element, head to the Boathouse to rent paddle boats and explore the park from a different perspective.

Kids have plenty of space to burn energy at multiple playgrounds, including a nature playscape with splash features for hot summer days. Sports enthusiasts can take advantage of baseball fields, basketball courts, soccer pitches, and volleyball courts scattered within the grounds.

Always Something Happening

The calendar at Forest Park stays packed year-round. From the emotional monologues of Shakespeare in the Park to the colorful spectacle of the Great Forest Park Balloon Race, there's always something to mark on your calendar. The sprawling green spaces make perfect picnic spots, with pavilions and grills available - many of which you can reserve ahead for special gatherings.

All the Comforts You Need

You'll find all the essentials here - clean restrooms, water fountains (including ones for your four-legged friends), and plenty of parking. Dog lovers, bring your pups along, just remember to keep them leashed. Throughout the grounds, benches and picnic tables offer places to catch your breath and soak in the scenery. Since the early 2000s, Forest Park has undergone thoughtful restoration guided by a comprehensive Master Plan and supported through public-private partnerships. These efforts have enhanced landscapes, improved natural habitats, and preserved historical features - ensuring that this urban treasure continues to delight generations to come.
