About the Location
A Piece of St. Louis History
Found in the Baden neighborhood, Hickey Park has been serving local residents since 1947. It bears the name of David Hickey, the first St. Louisan who lost his life in World War I during the Battle of the Toul Sector on February 24, 1918 - a touching tribute to a hometown hero.
Interestingly, this isn't the original Hickey Park. The first one, dedicated in 1941, sat at Goodfellow and Bircher boulevards but was repurposed during World War II for something arguably more pressing at the time: an ammunition plant. The park you can visit today was officially dedicated by Mayor Raymond Tucker in 1960.
What You'll Find There
Spread across 16.26 acres of public space, Hickey Park offers plenty of room to play and unwind. You'll find well-maintained baseball fields and soccer fields if team sports are your thing, along with generous open green spaces great for frisbee, picnics, or just lounging with a good book.
One of the park's best features is its paved walking path that loops around the grounds. If you're looking to add some extra oomph to your exercise routine, check out the blue workout equipment stationed at intervals along the path - a great way to mix up your cardio with some strength training without needing a gym membership.
Dog owners, your furry friends are welcome too! Just remember to bring your own waste bags, as the park is a bit limited on pet waste stations.
Perfect for Families
Kids won't be bored here - Hickey Park boasts two separate playground areas with modern equipment designed for different age groups. This thoughtful setup means toddlers can play safely while older kids tackle more challenging structures.
The picnic areas make this spot ideal for family get-togethers or weekend hangouts with friends. While there aren't permanent grills installed, you're welcome to bring portable barbecue equipment for your cookout needs.
Other Amenities
Sports enthusiasts will appreciate the basketball courts for pickup games, and there are even horseshoe pits if you're feeling a bit nostalgic for this classic outdoor activity.
Just a heads-up: restrooms are available but might not always be open, and water fountains are somewhat limited. You might want to pack some water bottles, especially during those hot Missouri summers.
Community Hub
The park is frequently used for church events, local performances, and family celebrations. Whether you live in Baden or are just passing through, this neighborhood park offers a glimpse into local life in north St. Louis.
