About the Location
Victorian Charm
Tucked away at the corner of 18th and E Streets in Lincoln, Nebraska, Hazel Abel Park is a quiet retreat in the neighborhood. This pocket-sized park has kept its Victorian theme alive since 1960, feeling like a quiet time capsule in the middle of the city.
The park's design gives it a distinctly historical atmosphere. The park has an interesting history - Alice Abel bought the land and named it after her mom, Hazel.
With its fountains, columns, benches, and decorative lighting, the whole place feels like a miniature gated community from another era.
Distinctive Features
Even though it's small, this park packs in plenty of character. Throughout the seasons, colorful flowers and rose bushes bring life to every corner.
The playground floor features a checkerboard-like pattern in black and white, adding to the park's distinctive character. A black fence surrounds the perimeter, enhancing the park's Victorian garden atmosphere.
Despite only covering about half a city block, the park manages to fit in a playground, a drinking fountain, and a charming gazebo that acts as the perfect spot to catch your breath and relax.
Playground Area
The playground isn't huge, but it's well-kept and updated with safety padding underfoot. It's really ideal for younger kids, and they seem to especially love the unique spring seesaw - something you don't see at every park.
You won't find swings here, but there's enough to keep little ones entertained for a while. The compact size is actually a bonus for parents - you can easily keep an eye on your children while enjoying the peaceful surroundings.
Renovation and Improvements
Back in 2010, the park got a significant $268,000 makeover. The renovations weren't just cosmetic - they trimmed hedges to improve visibility for parents, updated playground equipment to meet safety standards, and made the entire park handicap accessible.
The upgrade also brought in practical additions like trash cans and benches, along with fresh plantings to enhance the park's already charming atmosphere.
Visitor Experience
Beyond its playground, Hazel Abel serves well for weddings and small gatherings. The setting and landscaping attract photographers throughout the year.
You'll discover several benches and a table or two where you can enjoy lunch or a good book in peace. Despite its central location, many locals only discover this park by chance.
The park is well-maintained and has thoughtful design elements that distinguish it from other neighborhood parks. This quiet Victorian corner provides a peaceful spot amidst the bustle of the city.
Whether you're visiting with children or seeking a quiet moment, Hazel Abel Park remains somewhat of a hidden neighborhood gem.
