About the Location

Natural Features

Pioneers Park is a vast 668-acre nature preserve located on the southwestern edge of Lincoln, Nebraska. Established in 1963, the park offers visitors a diverse landscape of tallgrass prairie, woodlands, wetlands, and a tributary stream of Salt Creek.

The park serves as both a wildlife sanctuary and an environmental education center, providing a peaceful retreat for people and a habitat for various native species.

Trails and Wildlife

The park features over eight miles of hiking trails that wind through different ecosystems, allowing visitors to explore the natural beauty of Nebraska's landscape. These trails offer opportunities for bird watching, nature photography, and observing local wildlife in their natural habitats.

The park is home to several species of animals, including bison, elk, and white-tailed deer, which can be viewed in designated areas.

Nature Center

Pioneers Park Nature Center, located within the park, consists of two interpretive facilities that offer educational exhibits and programs. The Chet Ager Building, built in the 1960s, houses live animal exhibits, taxidermy mounts, and provides views of the adjacent bird garden and wetlands.

The Prairie Building, completed in stages between 1990 and 2007, incorporates green building features and includes prairie displays, live animal exhibits, an auditorium, and classroom spaces.

Educational Programs

Throughout the year, the Nature Center offers various educational programs and activities for visitors of all ages. These include guided nature hikes, day camps for children, and special events that focus on environmental education and conservation.

The park also serves as a site for scientific research and ecological restoration projects, contributing to the preservation of Nebraska's natural heritage.

Pioneers Park is open year-round, allowing visitors to experience the changing seasons in a natural setting. The park's diverse landscape and educational offerings make it a valuable resource for both recreation and learning about the natural history of Nebraska and the central Great Plains.
