About the Location
Historic Roots
Tucked between South 9th and Van Dorn streets in Lincoln, Nebraska, you'll find Van Dorn Park, a community green space with roots stretching back more than a century. The first piece of land was deeded to the city over 100 years ago, and since then, it's become a treasured spot where generations of locals have created lasting memories.
Mountain Biking Trails
If you're into two wheels and dirt paths, you'll appreciate the park's two-mile single-track mountain biking trail. It's a favorite among local riders, offering enough challenges to keep things interesting without being overwhelming. Recently, some new features have been added to spice up the ride, but admittedly, it's on the shorter side compared to other trails around Lincoln.
Want to extend your adventure? The trail conveniently connects to a broader network that reaches all the way to Pioneers Park - excellent for those days when you're craving a longer journey.
Playground Features
Kids gravitate toward the park's unique climbing structure that stands out from the typical playground fare you'll find elsewhere in Lincoln. Along with this centerpiece, there are jungle gym equipment and swings suitable for various ages. It's not Lincoln's largest playground by any means, but it offers plenty of space for little ones to play and burn off some energy.
Note that you'll need to walk a short distance from the parking area to reach the playground.
Walking Areas
For those who prefer keeping both feet on the ground, Van Dorn Park offers a pleasant walking loop that's great for a casual stroll or a more purposeful walk. Dog owners seem to have a particular affinity for this park - there's even a tunnel that goes under Van Dorn Street where you can walk your four-legged friends. One of the perks? The park rarely feels crowded, giving you and your pup some breathing room.
Facilities and Amenities
Plan on hosting an event? The park's climate-controlled indoor shelter is available for rental, making it suitable for meetings, parties, and gatherings of up to 50 people. It comes equipped with the essentials - modern bathrooms, sinks, tables, and chairs.
Across the grounds, you'll come across several picnic areas with charcoal grills and benches - great for an impromptu outdoor meal. The entire park, including the indoor shelter and its restrooms, is handicap accessible.
Just a heads-up: public restrooms might not be available unless someone has rented the shelter for the day.
Natural Setting
One of the park's most appealing aspects is its abundance of mature trees, providing welcome shade during Nebraska's warmer months. These wooded areas offer a peaceful urban retreat where nearby workers often come for a tranquil lunch break. The well-maintained grounds strike that perfect balance between natural beauty and practical amenities.
Van Dorn Park might not be the flashiest green space in Lincoln, but its combination of natural charm and recreational options makes it a versatile destination for anyone looking to spend some quality time outdoors.
