About the Location

Park History

Located in the Benson neighborhood of Omaha, Nebraska, Benson Park is a 217-acre green space that's been a local favorite since 1931. That's when Omaha acquired this chunk of land north of Military Avenue, transforming it into the recreational haven it is today.

Natural Features

At the heart of Benson Park lies a beautiful lagoon that really sets the scene. No matter if you're casting a line for some fishing or simply sitting back to take in the peaceful atmosphere, the water adds a special touch to the park experience. Keep your eyes peeled for the lagoon's residents - fish darting beneath the surface, turtles sunning themselves on rocks, and various waterfowl like ducks and geese gliding across the water. It creates a nice habitat for wildlife right in the city.

Feeling like stretching your legs? A cement loop about 1/3 mile long circles the lagoon, ideal for a casual stroll, a brisk jog, or walking your four-legged friend. Thoughtfully placed benches along the way invite you to pause and soak in those tranquil water views.

The park's landscape isn't just flat and boring - it rolls with hills and dips into lowlands, creating visual interest and different spaces for activities. Mature trees stand tall throughout the grounds, offering welcome shade on sunny days and adding to the park's natural charm.

Renovations and Improvements

Benson Park hasn't just been sitting static since the 1930s. 1999 marked a significant facelift for the park, including deepening the lake and adding new trails and sidewalks to improve accessibility.

In more recent years, the park gained a lovely picnic pavilion featuring decorative stone columns. This indoor space can be reserved for community gatherings, family reunions, or other special events.

Family-Friendly Amenities

If you've got kids in tow, Benson Park offers several options. The modern 8,500 square foot playground features multiple slides, climbing structures, swings, puzzles, musical bells, and interactive wheels. Parents can breathe easier knowing the playground has cushioned, rubber-like surfacing for safer play.

When summer temperatures climb, the popular splash pad becomes the place to be. Just note that occasionally some features might be temporarily out of service.

The park also boasts an all-access playground that cleverly transforms into a water park during summer months, ensuring fun for visitors of all abilities.

Sports and Recreation

For the more active crowd, Benson Park offers well-maintained basketball courts and tennis courts. The open grassy areas provide plenty of space for tossing around a football or frisbee with friends.

The lagoon remains a hotspot for fishing enthusiasts, with locals regularly reeling in bullheads and other catches.

Picnic Areas

You can find picnic tables generously distributed across the park, with concentrations near the playground and around the lake. Some areas even come equipped with simple grills, great for impromptu cookouts. Remember that tables operate on a first-come, first-served basis, so arriving early on nice days isn't a bad idea.

Many of these picnic spots benefit from the natural canopy of the park's tall trees, making them comfortable retreats for outdoor meals even on warmer days.

Seasonal Activities

Benson Park doesn't hibernate when temperatures drop. Near Military Avenue, you'll find an ice rink that operates from November through March, adding winter recreation to the park's year-round appeal.

Facilities

The park provides ample parking for visitors. While there aren't permanent restroom buildings, portable toilets are strategically placed around the lake for convenience.
