A Walk Through Time: The Story of Fontenelle
Nestled in North Omaha, Fontenelle Park spans a generous 108 acres at 4575 Ames Avenue. This green space wasn't an overnight addition - the land was purchased back in 1893 as part of a parks plan for Omaha, designed by Horace Cleveland in 1891.
Interestingly, the park faced some early skepticism for being "too far out of town" (can you imagine?), and it actually sat undeveloped for nearly twenty years until the growing city finally caught up to it.
From Blank Canvas to Beloved Space
By 1911, things started taking shape - the grounds were leveled, roads were carved out, and a golf course began to take form. Fast forward to 1916, and Fontenelle had transformed into one of Omaha's most cherished outdoor spaces.
A notable feature is the park's lagoon, created in 1915 and fed by natural springs. In winter, this water feature turns into a magical ice skating spot, while during warmer months, you'll find folks trying their luck with fishing rods in hand.
Wander through the park today and you'll notice the gently rolling terrain - a subtle reminder of its former life as a golf course, which once stretched across 80 acres before being converted to create more open community space.
Far From Just a Park
Fontenelle has witnessed its fair share of Omaha history. In 1939, crowds flocked here for the American Legion World Series, making it a hub for baseball enthusiasm.
The park once boasted a charming two-story brick pavilion built in 1927, complete with a dining hall, dance floor, showers, and an inviting wrap-around porch that surely hosted countless conversations and community gatherings.
New Life for an Old Friend
1998 marked a turning point when the park received a much-needed makeover - the lagoon was renovated, a new playground appeared, ball fields were improved, and walkways were enhanced for easier strolling.
More recently, a splash pad was added to help Omahans beat the summer heat, but it's worth noting it sometimes operates at limited capacity. The park continues to evolve, with new features periodically added to keep things fresh and functional.
Fontenelle Today
The modern Fontenelle Park offers something for almost everyone. If you're looking for a peaceful walk under mature trees or a more active day on the sports facilities, you can find your space here.
Within the grounds, you'll discover numerous picnic areas with grills ready for your cookout, including a covered pavilion ideal for family gatherings. The abundance of established trees creates a peaceful atmosphere that somehow makes you forget you're still in the city.
Good to Know Before You Go
Bring your four-legged friends along - the park is dog-friendly and offers plenty of space to explore together. While kids will enjoy the playground, keep in mind some equipment might show signs of wear and tear.
Note that there are no public restrooms available at the park. And while the bike paths provide good routes for cycling, you might encounter a few sections that could use some TLC.
Despite these minor considerations, Fontenelle Park provides a nice green space in Omaha's urban landscape, where you can take a break from city life just as locals have for generations.
