About Charlie Frias Park in Las Vegas
Charlie Frias Park, located in Las Vegas, Nevada, is a sprawling 76.6-acre recreational area that opened on October 8, 2012. The park is situated on the northwest corner of Tropicana Avenue and Decatur Boulevard, offering a serene retreat within the bustling city.
The park's design takes advantage of the natural contours shaped by the Flamingo Wash, incorporating scenic overlooks that provide visitors with picturesque views. A unique feature of Charlie Frias Park is its butterfly garden, adding a touch of natural beauty to the urban landscape.
Charlie Frias Park is divided into several distinct areas. A 12-acre neighborhood park is nestled on a bluff overlooking 14 acres of sports fields. The south side of the park features a separate plaza, playground, and maintenance facility occupying 13 acres. Additionally, the park includes a Regional Flood Control detention basin and 14 acres of natural conservation areas.
In recognition of the park's ecological importance, a conservation area has been set aside to preserve native Las Vegas buckwheat plants. This commitment to preserving local flora adds an educational element to the park's recreational offerings.
The park was funded through various sources, including $15 million from the Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act and $7 million from the Regional Flood Control District for the detention basin. The Frias family contributed $1 million to honor businessman and philanthropist Charlie Frias, who passed away in 2006.
