About the Location
Park Overview
Situated in the northwest corner of Tropicana Avenue and Decatur Boulevard, Charlie Frias Park spreads across a generous 76.6 acres, offering a peaceful escape from Las Vegas's energetic pulse since its opening on October 8, 2012.
The park incorporates the natural contours carved by the Flamingo Wash, creating scenic overlooks where you can enjoy views of the mountains and those Las Vegas sunsets that paint the sky in vibrant hues.
Natural Features
One of the park's lesser-known features is its charming butterfly garden - a colorful oasis amidst the desert city landscape.
The park goes beyond recreation by dedicating a conservation area to protect native Las Vegas buckwheat plants. This thoughtful preservation of local flora adds a nice educational touch to your visit, connecting you with Nevada's natural heritage.
Park Layout
Charlie Frias Park is thoughtfully divided into distinct zones. A 12-acre neighborhood park sits atop a bluff overlooking 14 acres of sports fields ideal for soccer matches, football games, or any team sport that requires some serious running room.
The south side houses a separate plaza, playgrounds, and maintenance facility across 13 acres. The design also incorporates a Regional Flood Control detention basin alongside 14 acres of natural conservation areas that help maintain the local ecosystem.
Recreational Amenities
If you're looking to break a sweat or entertain the kids, Charlie Frias Park offers several options. The park features well-maintained tennis courts, basketball courts, and a walking/running track that loops around the main grass field for about 3/4 of a mile - excellent for tracking your daily steps.
If you're visiting with little ones, you'll come across several playground areas with climbing structures to burn off that endless energy. During warmer months, the seasonal splash pad becomes the place to be, offering cool relief from the Nevada heat.
Bringing your four-legged friend? The dedicated dog park areas feature separate fenced sections for small and large dogs, with waste bags provided to keep things clean and enjoyable for everyone.
Exercise and Relaxation
Fitness enthusiasts will appreciate the outdoor exercise equipment stationed within the grounds, while the expansive open spaces invite yoga, frisbee, or just sprawling out on a blanket with a good book.
The paved walking paths weaving through the park are ideal for a morning jog or an evening stroll, accommodating walkers, runners, and cyclists alike.
When it's time to refuel or unwind, head to one of the many picnic areas with tables - some covered for shade. You'll also find BBQ pits and horseshoe pits if you're in the mood for some old-school outdoor entertainment.
Funding and History
The park was developed through multiple funding sources, including $15 million from the Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act and $7 million from the Regional Flood Control District for the detention basin.
The Frias family contributed $1 million to honor Charlie Frias, a respected businessman and philanthropist who passed away in 2006, leaving behind a legacy now commemorated in this vibrant community space.
