South Valleys Regional Park

Sports Facilities

South Valleys Regional Park is a 105-acre recreational area located in south Reno, Nevada. The park features a variety of sports fields including baseball and softball fields, multi-purpose fields for soccer and football, and a Babe Ruth baseball field.

These athletic fields are frequently used for league play, particularly during the months of May through October, which can lead to busy periods in the park.

Park History

The park was established in the early 1990s to meet the growing need for public sports facilities in the expanding southern portion of Truckee Meadows. Its development was made possible through land donations from several individuals and families, including Dr. Massoud Dorostkar, Virgil Wedge, Hadi Sahrakar, Theodora Peigh, and the Dr. Millard Duxbury family.

In 2009, an additional 23 acres were donated to the park, bringing its total area to 105 acres. This expansion allowed for the addition of more football and soccer fields.

Recreation Areas

In addition to sports facilities, South Valleys Regional Park offers amenities for general recreation and community gatherings. The park includes playgrounds, picnic areas, and reservable picnic shelters.

Two notable picnic pavilions are the Mt. Rose Pavilion and the Steamboat Pavilion, which can be reserved for group events.

Special Features

A unique feature of the park is the South Valleys Library, which opened in May 2003. The library's bright yellow building, designed by architect Michael Brendle, is intended to evoke the yellow flowers that bloom in the area, such as Rabbit Brush and Sagebrush.

Its large windows offer visitors views of Mount Rose. The park's location provides easy access from Arrowcreek Parkway or State Route 431 (Mount Rose Highway to Wedge Parkway).

Location Features

The park serves as a buffer between Interstate 580 and the residential areas to the west. The park's terrain includes both flat areas for sports fields and more rugged sections, with some parts of the park offering views of Mt. Rose.

The park continues to serve as an important recreational resource for the growing population of south Reno.
