About the Location

Sports Facilities

Situated in south Reno, Nevada, South Valleys Regional Park sprawls across 105 acres of recreational space. This expansive park features a variety of sporting venues including baseball and softball fields, versatile multi-purpose fields for soccer and football, and a dedicated Babe Ruth baseball field.

From May through October, these athletic facilities buzz with energy as local leagues take to the fields. With approximately five baseball fields and seven soccer fields, it's no wonder this park becomes a hub of activity during tournament seasons. If you're planning a casual weekend visit during these months, just be prepared to share the space with Reno's aspiring athletes!

Park History

The early 1990s saw South Valleys come to life when the expanding southern Truckee Meadows area needed more public sports facilities. The park exists thanks to the generosity of several land donors, including Dr. Massoud Dorostkar, Virgil Wedge, Hadi Sahrakar, Theodora Peigh, and the Dr. Millard Duxbury family.

In 2009, the park grew significantly when an additional 23 acres were donated, bringing it to its current 105-acre footprint. This extra space made room for more football and soccer fields, expanding recreational opportunities for the community.

Recreation Areas

Beyond organized sports, South Valleys offers plenty of space for everyday fun. Multiple playgrounds dot the landscape, with smaller play areas tucked near the lower baseball fields and another conveniently located by the soccer fields.

For those perfect Nevada days when dining al fresco calls your name, the park provides several picnic areas complete with BBQ grills. Planning something bigger? The Mt. Rose Pavilion and Steamboat Pavilion can be reserved for gatherings that deserve a special setting.

Special Features

One of the park's standout attractions is the South Valleys Library, which opened its doors in May 2003. The library's distinctive bright yellow building isn't just an architectural whim - it was thoughtfully designed by architect Michael Brendle to echo the yellow Rabbit Brush and Sagebrush blooms that characterize the region.

Large windows frame stunning views of Mount Rose, bringing the natural landscape into the reading experience. Just adjacent to the park sits Reno Ice, offering even more recreational diversity. And for four-legged family members, the dog park provides a safe, dedicated space where pups can romp off-leash and make new friends.

Recreation Opportunities

The park offers activities for a wide range of interests. Casual athletes might enjoy a round on the disc golf course, while fitness enthusiasts can take advantage of the outdoor fitness areas.

When winter blankets the region with snow, the park's hills transform into natural sledding spots for thrilling downhill runs. Baseball and softball players looking to perfect their swing can head to the batting cages for some extra practice.

Location Features

Located between Interstate 580 and residential neighborhoods to the west, South Valleys functions as both recreational space and community buffer zone. The terrain varies within the park, from level stretches that accommodate sports fields to more rugged areas that preserve the natural landscape.

From certain vantage points, you'll catch breathtaking views of Mt. Rose and the surrounding scenery. As south Reno continues to grow, this park remains an essential green space for the community. Parking is typically plentiful, however you might need to circle a bit during those busy weekend tournaments when multiple events coincide.
