A Serene Oasis in the City

The 25-acre man-made lake at the heart of this park dates back to 1938-1939, when it was built as part of a Works Progress Administration (WPA) project during the Great Depression - a little piece of American history right in Reno's backyard. Virginia Lake Park spreads across 32 acres in total, with the lake reaching depths of 12 feet and pulling double duty by helping with stormwater management while offering a spot for recreational fishing.

The surrounding grounds provide a welcome contrast to Reno's desert landscape, with grassy areas and leafy trees creating shady spots meant for afternoon picnics or simply unwinding with a good book.

Get Moving or Take It Slow

One of the park's most popular features is its 1-mile paved loop trail circling the lake. It's beautifully flat and accessible, making it ideal whether you're out for a morning jog, an evening stroll, or a leisurely bike ride. Benches line the path for those moments when you just want to pause and take in the view.

For those who prefer to get closer to the water, there's a gravel path that hugs the shoreline. Fitness enthusiasts will appreciate the fitness stations dotted along the trail - a free outdoor gym that lets you work out while enjoying fresh air and natural surroundings.

Family Fun and Gatherings

The park houses two children's playgrounds that little ones will love exploring (just keep in mind that those metal slides can transform into mini furnaces during summer months). Picnic areas complete with tables and barbecue grills are scattered throughout, with some larger spaces that work perfectly for family reunions or birthday celebrations.

Just a half block from the main lake area, there's a dedicated off-leash dog park where dogs can run free. The main park welcomes leashed dogs, and you'll see plenty of happy pups and their humans making their way around the lake path.

Bird enthusiasts will be thrilled by the diverse feathered residents, including ducks, geese, double-crested cormorants, snowy egrets, herons, and California gulls. For fishing enthusiasts, the lake is regularly stocked with rainbow trout, brown trout, and channel catfish. You might even land something impressive - there are stories of a lucky angler who caught and released a 24-pound fish back into these waters!

You don't need to worry about basic amenities here. The park maintains clean restroom facilities and offers drinking water throughout. When the Nevada sun gets intense, you can retreat to one of the many shaded areas under the mature trees that frame the pathways and picnic spots.

A relatively new addition to the park's offerings are paddle boats, adding yet another way to enjoy this urban lake. The grounds are well-kept and regularly cleaned, which definitely enhances the experience for everyone who visits.
