About the Location

History and Landscape

What started as a working ranch in the early 1980s has evolved into one of Reno's popular outdoor havens. Spread across an impressive 570 acres, Rancho San Rafael Regional Park offers a little bit of everything when it comes to Nevada's diverse landscapes.

Wander through manicured lawns that transition into native pasture grasses, discover hidden wetlands, or explore the high desert terrain that reminds you you're in the Great Basin. The views here? Simply breathtaking - mountains on one side, desert vistas on the other. It provides a nice escape from city life without actually leaving town.

Notable Attractions

The park includes the Wilbur D. May Museum and the Wilbur D. May Arboretum & Botanical Garden.

Curious minds will appreciate the museum's collection of artifacts gathered from around the globe. Plant lovers, on the other hand, might lose track of time in the arboretum, which showcases an impressive variety of Great Basin native species. The botanical gardens feature seasonal displays, bridges, and a small waterfall that provides a peaceful soundtrack for an afternoon visit.

Don't miss the pollinator garden - it's often buzzing with bumblebees and other pollinators going about their important work, offering both a visual treat and a mini-lesson in ecology.

Recreational Opportunities

Lacing up your hiking boots or hopping on your bike? Miles of trails weave around the park, making it easy to get your nature fix. The walkways are well-maintained, and you'll even find fitness stations along some routes if you're feeling extra energetic.

For more relaxed outings, there are plenty of picnic areas, playgrounds, and open fields well-suited for frisbee, catch, or just lounging with a good book. Several covered pavilions with tables dot the landscape - the larger ones can be reserved if you're planning a gathering.

The park really comes alive during special events. September brings the Great Reno Balloon Race, when the early morning sky fills with colorful hot air balloons - an early wake-up well worth it if you enjoy this kind of spectacle. Year-round, you might catch the Dragon Lights festival, various car shows, or the Lavender Fest.

Northern Section

For those seeking a slightly wilder experience, head to the northern section beyond McCarran Boulevard. The terrain gets more rugged up there, offering some fantastic hiking and biking challenges. Don't worry about crossing the busy road - there's a convenient tunnel underneath.

This area is also home to a disc golf course where you can test your frisbee skills, and the Basque Sheepherder Monument - a thoughtful tribute to an important piece of the region's cultural heritage.

Dog-Friendly Areas

Dog parents, rejoice! The park features one of the region's largest off-leash areas where your four-legged friends can run free and make new buddies. During warmer months, pups can even cool off in a small pond - bring a towel for the car ride home!

Just remember that in the main park areas, dogs need to stay leashed, however you'll come across plenty of fellow dog walkers enjoying the trails throughout the park.

Amenities and Facilities

You'll come across clean restrooms throughout the park, particularly near the Ranch House, museum, and pond areas - always a welcome feature for longer visits.

The duck pond is a peaceful spot to pause and watch various waterfowl go about their day. For those looking to maintain their fitness routine outdoors, the park offers a dedicated fitness court and various workout stations.

Rancho San Rafael offers a substantial green space in Reno's urban landscape, with opportunities to connect with nature, enjoy recreation, and experience a piece of the area's natural and cultural history.
