A Piece of Reno History

Dating back to the 1920s, Idlewild Park isn't just a pretty face - it's a piece of American highway heritage. In the 1920s, Reno sat at the intersection of two major transcontinental routes: the Lincoln Highway (which runs as U.S. 50 today) and the Victory Highway (the old U.S. 40 alignment through Reno, now 4th Street). The 1927 Transcontinental Highway Exposition was held to celebrate the completion of both highways through the city, and the California Building - a Mission Revival-style structure built specifically for that occasion and gifted to Reno by the State of California - still stands proudly within the park grounds. Now listed in the National Register of Historic Places, the building was transferred to the City of Reno in 1938 and today serves as an event venue for weddings, cultural gatherings, and community events.

That same 1927 Exposition left another mark on Reno's identity. The original Reno Arch - predecessor to the famous sign that now spans Virginia Street - was built for the event and at some point temporarily relocated to Idlewild Park before finding its current home spanning Lake Street, next to the National Automobile Museum. It's a detail that quietly connects the park to one of the most recognizable symbols in the city. Keep an eye out too for the Wai-Pau-Shoe Whispering Giant, a carved wooden sculpture by Hungarian artist Peter Wolf Toth that pays homage to the Washoe tribes.

Natural Beauty Spots

The stroll through Idlewild's landscape, with its serene duck ponds and open green spaces, offers a peaceful retreat from city life. The one-acre rose garden is quite remarkable - established in 1958, it houses over 200 varieties of roses and more than 1,750 individual plants. It's actually the only rose garden in Nevada certified by the American Rose Society - pretty impressive! The Truckee River flowing alongside the park adds to the tranquil atmosphere, whether you're trying your luck at fishing or just sitting on the bank watching the water flow by. On those scorching Nevada summer days, the park's abundant trees provide welcome shade, making it an ideal natural air conditioner.

Get Moving

Idlewild Park has enough recreational options to keep even the most energetic visitors busy. Multiple playgrounds cater to different age groups - toddlers have their own small space, while older kids can tackle the larger playground complete with ziplines. When the temperature rises, the small splash pad becomes the most popular spot in the park.

Sports enthusiasts will appreciate the sports fields, tennis courts, a swimming pool, and a skate park for showing off tricks. The paved walking and biking paths connect to the Truckee River trails, fantastic for a morning jog or an evening stroll. And if you're into outdoor workouts, check out the outdoor fitness area with equipment that lets you pump iron while soaking up some vitamin D.

Family Fun Central

Idlewild Park really shines as a family destination. The miniature train is a highlight when in operation during seasonal months - there's something universally delightful about chugging around the park on those tiny tracks, no matter your age.

The duck ponds offer great wildlife watching opportunities, with ducks, geese, and squirrels that seem almost as happy to see you as you are to see them. Multiple picnic areas with tables and barbecue pits make this a great spot to spread out a blanket and enjoy lunch under the Nevada sky.
