About the Location
A Bit of History
Tucked below street level, this charming rectangular green space is nestled between Albion Way, East Taylor Street, and Belgrave Avenue. Wilkinson Park's story began back in 1951 when it was planned as part of the Wilkinson subdivision.
By 1955, the park had its first playground, restrooms, and shelter installed, with the City of Reno officially taking ownership in 1959. Over the decades, the city has expanded the grassy areas and planted what are now the magnificent mature trees that cast cool, welcoming shade across the park.
What You'll Find
Wilkinson Park spans 4.29 acres in one of Reno's more established neighborhoods and falls under the care of the City of Reno Parks & Recreation department.
Despite its modest size, this little park offers a variety of recreational options. One of its notable features is the abundant greenery and mature trees that provide welcome shade from the Nevada sun.
For the Kids (and Kids at Heart)
There's a playground area where little ones can burn off energy, however, some of the equipment could use a bit of TLC. While the play structures themselves sit in the sun, you'll come across plenty of shaded areas nearby where you can keep an eye on the kids while staying cool.
The grassy areas are good for spreading out a blanket, tossing a frisbee, reading, or simply relaxing.
Facilities
You can find restrooms with running water and soap - a definite plus for families with young children or anyone planning to spend a few hours here. Just be aware that these facilities aren't always unlocked, so it might be worth having a backup plan.
Recent Touch-Ups
The park hasn't been forgotten by the city - in 2019, $155,000 in Reno block grants went toward revitalizing the aging tennis courts, helping to keep this neighborhood green relevant and useful for the community.
Get Moving
Wilkinson Park has evolved into a versatile space that caters to various activities while maintaining its peaceful atmosphere.
On any given day, you might spot locals enjoying a game of pickleball or tennis, practicing their swing at the baseball area, shooting hoops at the basketball court, or kicking a ball around the soccer-friendly spaces.
Four-Legged Friends Welcome
Though not officially designated as a dog park, Wilkinson has become a favorite spot for local dog owners. The open layout provides enough room for sociable pups to make new friends, while also offering space for the more reserved dogs to enjoy at their own pace. You'll often see neighborhood residents walking their furry companions through this pleasant community space.
