About the Location

River's Edge Escape

Next to the Truckee River in West Reno, Mayberry Park spans 15 acres of day-use natural area. Located at 101 Woodland Avenue, this Washoe County park offers a piece of riverside tranquility just four miles from downtown Reno - close enough for a quick escape but far enough to forget the city buzz.

Picnic Paradise

Scattered around the park, you'll discover picnic tables nestled in prime spots - some right along the river, others beneath welcome patches of shade. There's a group picnic area available on a first-come basis (no reservations here!), however larger gatherings of 25+ people need to secure a permit and book a designated pavilion elsewhere.

Free charcoal BBQ grills dot the landscape, great for sizzling up some burgers while the kids run wild on the sprawling grassy field near the parking area. This open space works well for impromptu games of frisbee or simply spreading out a blanket and enjoying some Nevada sunshine.

Trail Adventures

A smooth paved bike path winds through the park, connecting to the larger Tahoe-Pyramid Trail network for those looking to venture further. Hiking enthusiasts can hit the Tom Cooke trailhead which begins right at the park. Whether you prefer the accessibility of paved paths or the natural feel of dirt trails, Mayberry has options for every preference.

The trails follow the Truckee River's meandering course, offering peaceful views along the way. Most paths are relatively flat, making them approachable for families, casual strollers, and more ambitious runners alike.

River Fun

The Truckee River is the star attraction here, drawing fishing enthusiasts with poles in hand and hopeful hearts. When summer heats up, the river becomes a refreshing playground for swimming and tubing.

Many locals consider Mayberry an excellent launching spot for river adventures. You can start a float trip here and end up at Wingfield Park downtown - a leisurely two-hour journey downstream. The river access is notably shallow and calm, making it safer for launching than other spots along the Truckee.

Little coves and inlets along the shoreline create natural swimming holes and fishing spots. On scorching summer days, the cold, clear water provides welcome relief.

Wildlife Watching

Bring your binoculars - the park hosts a diverse cast of birds and wildlife going about their daily business. The natural riverside setting creates a mini-ecosystem where plants and animals thrive, offering quiet moments of discovery for patient observers.

The peaceful atmosphere allows you to connect with nature without traveling far from the city. Sometimes just sitting by the river, watching the water flow past, can be a nice break from a busy week.

Four-Legged Friends Welcome

Mayberry Park is wonderfully dog-friendly, with plenty of space for your furry companions to explore. While the rules do require keeping dogs leashed, the trails and grassy areas provide ample opportunity for you and your pet to get some exercise and fresh air together.

Know Before You Go

The park offers wheelchair-accessible areas and basic restroom facilities - portable toilets near the parking area that are regularly maintained (though they can get a bit rough during busy periods).

Parking exists but fills quickly during prime times, especially summer weekends and holidays. If you're planning a visit during peak season, arriving early is your best bet to secure a spot.

Mayberry Park functions as both a standalone destination and an access point to the larger Truckee River environment.
