A Slice of Reno History

Next to the Truckee River near downtown Reno sits Barbara Bennett Park, a 3-acre urban oasis with roots as deep as the city itself. Parts of this land once belonged to Wynn Lake back in 1865, while other sections were Central Pacific Railroad property in 1876.

The City of Reno purchased the land in 1906, establishing it as Riverside Park - a community hotspot for concerts, dancing, and picnicking. In 1995, it was renamed to honor Barbara Bennett, Reno's trailblazing first female mayor who served from 1979 to 1983.

Sprawling grassy areas and generous shade trees make this spot excellent for spreading out a blanket and unwinding. Tennis courts were added during the Roaring Twenties and Thirties, with a significant facilities upgrade coming in the 1980s to create the park we know today.

The Extras

In 1998, the park gained additional character when 30 young artists created murals through a Youth Artworks project. These colorful expressions add a unique artistic dimension to your visit, with more artwork in the surrounding area providing interesting backdrops for photos.
