About the Location

A Slice of Reno History

Next to the Truckee River near downtown Reno sits Barbara Bennett Park, a 3-acre urban oasis with roots as deep as the city itself. Parts of this land once belonged to Wynn Lake back in 1865, while other sections were Central Pacific Railroad property in 1876.

The City of Reno purchased the land in 1906, establishing it as Riverside Park - a community hotspot for concerts, dancing, and picnicking. In 1995, it was renamed to honor Barbara Bennett, Reno's trailblazing first female mayor who served from 1979 to 1983.

What You'll Find

Step away from Reno's buzzing streets and into this peaceful retreat with its lush greenery and well-kept grounds. The park's position alongside the Truckee River creates a picturesque backdrop and offers places to dip your toes (or more) into the water when temperatures rise.

Sprawling grassy areas and generous shade trees make this spot excellent for spreading out a blanket and unwinding. Tennis courts were added during the Roaring Twenties and Thirties, with a significant facilities upgrade coming in the 1980s to create the park we know today.

Get Your Game On

Kids will love the updated playground featuring modern equipment suitable for various ages. Basketball enthusiasts can hit two full courts where local players often gather for pickup games that range from casual to surprisingly competitive.

The park's two tennis courts remain well-maintained and frequently attract players looking for a friendly match. No matter if you're shooting hoops or serving aces, these facilities make Barbara Bennett Park a versatile spot for getting active in downtown Reno.

River Vibes

Perhaps the park's greatest treasure is its direct access to the Truckee River. The gentle sound of flowing water creates a calming backdrop to any visit. During summer, the swimming areas become particularly popular, with multiple entry points where you can wade into the cooler waters.

Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife - ducks paddling along and tadpoles darting beneath the surface add to the natural charm. Dog owners particularly appreciate this spot, as four-legged friends often enjoy off-leash splashing in the river, making it something of an unofficial canine social club.

Pathways and Perspectives

The walking trails here connect seamlessly to the Riverwalk area, creating an extended green corridor through downtown. You'll come across benches thoughtfully placed throughout the park, ideal for catching your breath while taking in views of the river and Reno's distinctive skyline.

These paths make for a pleasant stroll on their own or can be incorporated into a longer riverside walk. There's something special about finding such tranquility so close to urban life - a refreshing contrast to the city energy just beyond its borders.

The Extras

You'll spot several picnic tables scattered across the grounds, making impromptu riverside meals easy and convenient. Clean restrooms are available, however they might need a bit of attention during peak times.

In 1998, the park gained additional character when 30 young artists created murals through a Youth Artworks project. These colorful expressions add a unique artistic dimension to your visit, with more artwork in the surrounding area providing interesting backdrops for photos.

Barbara Bennett Park is a popular community space where Reno's past and present merge, with a diverse range of activities in a serene setting just steps from downtown.
