About Harriman Park

A Glimpse into the Past

Before it was the park we know today, Harriman Park went by the name East Side Park, gifted to the city by Emma S. Richard on October 31, 1905.

Fast forward to May 2, 1922, when the park was renamed to honor Lt. Lynn H. Harriman, who served in the 101st Infantry during World War I.

The Hero Behind the Name

Lt. Harriman's story is one of true sacrifice. He was mortally wounded in battle on May 1, 1918, and passed away exactly one month later. His courage didn't go unnoticed - he was posthumously awarded both the French Croix de Guerre and the American Distinguished Service Cross.

What's particularly interesting is that despite having no direct ties to Manchester (he wasn't born here and never lived here), the city chose to honor his heroism by naming this park after him.

The Park Today

Spanning just 0.41 acres, Harriman Park might be small, but it is a perfect little oasis at the corner of Lake Avenue and Hall Street.

The modest size creates an intimate neighborhood spot that's good for a quick break or catching up with neighbors.

What You'll Find Here

The park has a playground with areas for different age groups. Little ones have their own space with age-appropriate equipment, while older kids can enjoy the more challenging climbing structures.

For those looking to shoot some hoops, there's a basketball court that's become a neighborhood favorite. Despite being compact, the layout accommodates various activities while keeping everyone within sight - helpful for parents watching their children.

The Vibe

There's something calming about this little corner of Manchester. The park is notably well-maintained and clean, offering a peaceful retreat from city life.

Though not the largest green space in town, Harriman Park offers both quiet spots for relaxation and active areas for play, while honoring its namesake hero.
