About the Location
A Glimpse of History in Newark
Found in the urban landscape of Newark, New Jersey is Branch Brook Park, a historic green spanning 360 acres of green space. Not just any park, this is actually the first county park ever opened for public use in the United States - a little piece of American history right in North Jersey.
The park stretches like a green ribbon - four miles long and a quarter-mile wide - winding from Newark's North Ward into neighboring Belleville. It's a breath of fresh air cutting through the city landscape.
Thoughtfully Designed Greenspace
The Olmsted Brothers firm put their creative touch on Branch Brook back in 1900, and their work still shines today. These were the sons of the mastermind behind Central Park, and you can feel that same thoughtful approach to blending natural beauty with public recreation, just on a cozier scale.
The park is neatly divided into four distinct areas: the North Division keeps things wild and natural; the Middle Division is where you'll discover ball fields and walking paths; the South Division holds the park's oldest areas; and the Park Extension is cherry blossom central (more on that in a moment).
Cherry Blossom Heaven
If you've heard of Branch Brook Park before, it's probably because of the trees. With over 5,000 cherry trees showcasing 18 different varieties, this place actually outdoes Washington D.C. in both number and diversity of cherry blossoms. It's America's largest collection, and it's absolutely stunning.
Come spring, the annual Cherry Blossom Festival transforms the park into a pink wonderland that draws more than 100,000 visitors. You'll come across cultural events, live music, and even a 10K run happening among the blossoms. For the most jaw-dropping views, head to the Cherry Blossom Welcome Center area or take a stroll around the south loop of the large lake.
Natural Beauty
Water features add another dimension to Branch Brook's charm. A network of lakes, ponds, and streams weaves throughout the landscape. The largest lake spans 24 acres in the Southern Division and is regularly stocked with trout for fishing enthusiasts.
One of the park's subtle highlights is its collection of nineteen unique bridges crossing these waterways. For a particularly picturesque spot, find your way to the area near the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, where the pond creates a wonderful foreground for the impressive cathedral behind it.
Something for Everyone
Beyond pretty views, Branch Brook offers plenty of recreational options. You'll find tennis courts, baseball fields, basketball courts, soccer fields, and even a roller skating center scattered throughout. The Lenape Trail Loop offers a nice two-mile circuit that's ideal for walks, jogs, or bike rides.
Families will appreciate the multiple playgrounds, with one of the best located near the Cherry Blossom Welcome Center. Dog owners can let their furry friends run free in the dedicated dog park, a secure space for off-leash play.
The sprawling lawns make for ideal picnic spots, although you might want to bring a blanket since proper picnic tables are somewhat limited. During warmer months, food trucks often appear to save you from having to pack your own lunch.
Recognized Heritage
Branch Brook Park's significance hasn't gone unnoticed - it's listed on both the New Jersey (1980) and National (1981) Registers of Historic Places. Through the seasons, it remains a valued green space in Newark, offering both natural beauty and recreational opportunities for everyone who visits.
