About the Location
A Park With History
Sitting comfortably in Newark's Central Ward between Avon and Muhammad Ali Avenues, Jesse Allen Park holds the title of the city's second-largest municipal green space. This eight-acre green space is used by more than 18,000 people living within a half-mile radius, including the young learners from Louise A. Spencer Elementary School just next door.
The park first opened its gates in 1979, named after City Councilmember Jesse Allen who left his mark on Newark through his dedication to community building.
From Vision to Reality: The Renovation Journey
Between 2009 and 2022, Jesse Allen Park underwent a remarkable transformation through a three-phase renovation project. This wasn't just any makeover - it was a complete reimagining of what a community park could be, with multiple functions to serve the neighborhood's diverse needs.
The redevelopment was notably collaborative. Local residents, community groups, The Trust for Public Land, the City of Newark, and various corporate partners all came together to breathe new life into this space. Their goal? Creating a safe, welcoming environment that promotes health, wellness, and sustainability for Newarkers of all ages.
One of the notable additions has been the turf fields that provide reliable playing surfaces regardless of weather conditions.
What You'll Find Here
Jesse Allen Park balances active recreation and peaceful relaxation. The layout includes both open green spaces for unwinding and designated areas for sports and play.
Sports enthusiasts will appreciate the variety of facilities: basketball courts, soccer fields, baseball fields, tennis courts, and volleyball courts offer something for just about everyone. The skate park is popular with skateboarders and riders, while the network of walking trails offers pathways for a casual stroll or a brisk workout.
Fun for the Little Ones
The park features a playground area that's popular with children. If you're planning a visit with children, keep in mind that the playground can get quite busy during school hours and weekends, as it's a popular spot for both local families and students from the neighboring school.
When summer temperatures rise, the splash pad becomes the place to be, offering a fun way for children to cool off while playing in the water.
Good to Know Before You Go
You can find public restrooms available, however do note they aren't always open during all park hours. There are also several picnic areas with seating where you can enjoy a meal or snack in the open air.
The park tends to be busiest during daylight hours and when school lets out. For safety reasons, it's generally best to plan your visit during daylight hours.
Dog owners, your four-legged friends are welcome as long as they stay on leash. With plenty of open space, there's room for everyone, whether you're looking for active recreation or just a peaceful spot in the city.
