About the Location
A Piece of Essex County History
Located on the border between Newark and South Orange, Ivy Hill Park sprawls across nearly 19 acres right next to Seton Hall University. Back in 1927, the Essex County Parks Commission scooped up this land from Newark, recognizing that the booming communities of Maplewood, Newark, South Orange, and Irvington needed some breathing room.
The park bears the creative touch of the Olmsted Brothers firm - yes, the same landscape architects behind some of America's most iconic green spaces. Ivy Hill didn't pop up overnight, though. It evolved gradually, with significant improvements coming during the 1930s thanks to the Works Progress Administration during the New Deal era.
What You'll Find There
The park has ten hard surface tennis courts, with an interesting backstory - six of these courts actually sit on land borrowed from Seton Hall University through a 1986 agreement. It's a win-win: the university gets to use the park's facilities, and the county keeps the courts in top shape.
Beyond tennis, you can find a variety of sports fields for baseball, basketball, and soccer. Families with little ones will appreciate the substantial playground where kids can burn off energy. When nature calls, you won't be stranded - public restrooms and shelters are available within the grounds.
Fitness fans can use the park's jogging path that meanders through the property, complemented by outdoor gym equipment for those looking to squeeze in a workout.
Why Locals Love It
Ivy Hill Park is an important recreational space in this corner of Essex County. Its location is pretty ideal - surrounded by high-rise apartments, Seton Hall University, and residential neighborhoods - making it accessible to a diverse mix of people from students cramming for finals to families enjoying weekend outings.
The park offers a welcome escape from urban life with its well-maintained grounds and fresh air. Essex County has put effort into recent improvements, but you might occasionally spot ongoing maintenance work. Some visitors note that additional safety features like better lighting would be welcome additions.
The park reflects the Olmsted Brothers' design philosophy - offering a space that's both attractive and practical for playing, exercising, or simply enjoying some time among the trees.
