About the Location
A Place of Remembrance
Located in a residential corner of Albuquerque, Bataan Memorial Park is a quiet yet powerful tribute to the soldiers who endured the Bataan Death March during World War II. This green space honors the 1,816 men, mostly New Mexicans, of the 200th and 515th Coast Artillery Regiment - brave souls who fought in the Philippines, with 829 ultimately losing their lives in battle or as POWs.
The park's history runs deep. It was filed as a park site on April 18, 1941, and officially named Bataan Memorial Park on March 2, 1943, by the Albuquerque City Commission. Their stated purpose? To commemorate "the super-human sacrifices endured by the men of the 200th Coast Artillery Anti-aircraft Regiment on Luzon, Philippine Islands, that freedom and liberty of mankind shall be preserved."
Walking Through History
The park features a stone memorial from 1960, erected by family members and neighbors. In 2002, a thoughtful addition came in the form of granite panels designed to resemble marching soldiers.
You can walk alongside these panels, which lead to the original memorial - a simple yet moving experience that helps connect visitors to the history being honored here. It's genuinely humbling to read about the Bataan Death March while standing in this peaceful space. Interestingly, where picnic tables now stand, there once was a big gun display - a reminder of how places of remembrance evolve over time.
More Than a Memorial
While honoring history remains its primary purpose, Bataan Memorial Park also is a popular green space for the surrounding community. Large shade trees dot the landscape, creating cool spots on hot Albuquerque days.
A 0.33-mile walking trail of concrete and packed gravel winds through the park - not challenging by any means, but great for a contemplative stroll or a quick bit of exercise. Permanent benches scattered throughout invite you to sit and reflect, or simply watch the world go by.
Come Play, Come Gather
The park's open, flat terrain makes it a natural playground for all sorts of activities. On any given day, you might spot locals playing soccer, volleyball, football, flying drones, or tossing balls to enthusiastic dogs.
This versatile space also hosts various community gatherings year-round, including the annual Pagan Pride Day Harvest Festival held on the last Sunday of September.
You might even stumble upon medieval fighters from the Society for Creative Anachronism (S.C.A.) practicing their skills among the trees. Birthday parties, weddings, farmers markets - the park accommodates them all with its simple, flexible layout.
Take a Break, Have a Picnic
Feeling hungry? Several picnic tables are scattered within the grounds, most nestled under the canopy of those gorgeous shade trees. The combination of grass and dappled sunlight makes for a pleasant setting for outdoor meals.
And if you forgot the snacks, no worries - there's a Walgreens nearby where you can grab supplies for an impromptu picnic.
Bring Your Four-Legged Friends
Dog lovers, rejoice! The park is dog-friendly, but your furry companions need to stay on leash. The walking path that encircles the park offers a perfect route for daily dog walks, while the open grassy areas provide plenty of space for gentle play.
Just remember to clean up after your pets so everyone can enjoy this special place - a neighborhood haven that balances solemn remembrance with the simple joys of everyday life.
