About the Location
Trail System
Black Arroyo Park winds along a natural waterway cutting through northern Albuquerque. This network of trails isn't just pretty to look at - it's a great spot for walking, jogging, or cycling, depending on what kind of outdoor time you're craving.
The park offers two main trail loops totaling about 2.15 miles. If you start at Salida Del Sol Park and head to Ellison before looping back, you'll cover 1.15 miles. The second loop runs from Hunter Run Park to Ellison and back, giving you a neat 1-mile route.
Accessibility and Features
Both trails are rated Grade 2 in difficulty - nothing too challenging for most people. The paths are paved with asphalt and range from 8-12 feet wide, making for smooth walking or riding without having to constantly yield to others.
What makes this park special is how it embraces the natural landscape. You'll get some lovely views of New Mexico's desert scenery while enjoying the shade of trees lining many sections of the path. The contrast between the lush green grass and the typical desert surroundings creates a peaceful little oasis that's ideal for clearing your head.
Recreation Areas
Within the park, you'll come across picnic tables tucked under shady spots - great for a family lunch or even small birthday celebrations if you're looking for a low-key venue. There's plenty of open grassy space too, fantastic for throwing a frisbee or just stretching out with a good book.
The play areas are mainly designed for kids around seven and up, with some fun sand play areas included. If you're bringing children along, tell them to keep an eye out for the hidden dinosaur eggs buried in the sand beneath the shovel play equipment - it's a small detail that kids tend to love.
Community Connections
Black Arroyo connects two neighborhood parks, creating a continuous green space through the urban landscape. You can find it near the intersection of Golf Course and McMahon NW, making it easily accessible if you live nearby.
The park's location near Cibola High School makes it accessible for many residents. Over the years, many local families have made it a regular destination, enjoying its natural beauty and relaxed atmosphere.
Amenities and Parking
Note that there are no public restrooms available in the park, so plan accordingly. Parking is somewhat limited, especially during busy times, so you might want to arrive early on weekends or consider walking or biking there if you live in the neighborhood.
