About the Location

Park Features

Tucked in the southwest corner of Albuquerque, Westgate Community Park sits at the junction of Benavides and Snow Vista SW, right next to Truman Middle School. This little green oasis offers plenty of room to stretch your legs and play.

The sprawling grassy areas are fantastic for impromptu games of frisbee, kicking around a soccer ball, or tossing a football with friends. What's nice is that there's enough space for everyone - visitors won't be bumping elbows with the group next to them, even on busier days.

Walking Trail

If you're looking to get some steps in, the park has a paved walking path that loops around for 0.3 miles. The 5-foot wide asphalt trail is smooth and well-maintained, making it easy for a quick jog or a leisurely evening stroll.

Rated as Grade 1 difficulty, this path is accessible for just about everyone. For those counting steps, you'll rack up about 635 steps on a full loop - not bad for a quick workout!

The trail does have bright white lights that come on at night. They definitely keep things safe after dark, but they're pretty intense if you're hoping for a more subdued evening ambiance.

Recreation Areas

Basketball enthusiasts will appreciate the courts with metal nets. They're generally in good shape, however like anything in a public park, they occasionally show signs of wear and could use a little TLC.

Dog parents, rejoice! The fenced dog park area features mulch ground covering that's gentle on your furry friend's paws. Your pup can run free and socialize in this dedicated space, or you can opt for an on-leash walk around the park's perimeter if that's more your style.

Playground

Kids aged 2 and up will find plenty to keep them entertained at the playground. The equipment includes slides with sun-protective covers - a thoughtful touch considering New Mexico's strong sunshine.

The playground offers enough variety to keep little ones engaged, making it a go-to spot for families in the neighborhood looking to burn off some energy.

Location & Accessibility

You'll discover trees dotting the walking path, offering welcome patches of shade on hot days. Being right next to Truman Middle School makes this park especially convenient for students and families living nearby.

No car? No problem. You can reach the park via public transportation - just look for ABQ Ride bus stop #54. If you're driving, there's a parking lot available, but be prepared for a somewhat bumpy surface.

Amenities & Considerations

The park offers picnic tables where you can enjoy a packed lunch or snack, plus some sheltered areas for when you need a break from the sun or a surprise shower.

Note that there are no water fountains or permanent restroom facilities here, so you'll want to plan accordingly before your visit.

As for cleanliness, it varies from day to day. Sometimes you might encounter some litter or broken glass, so keep an eye out, especially if you have kids or pets in tow. The park is at its best during daylight hours - nighttime visits aren't really recommended by regular park-goers.
