About the Location
A Lakeside Haven in Buffalo
Tucked along the shoreline where Lake Erie meets the Niagara River, Ralph Wilson Park spans 100 acres of Buffalo waterfront. This expansive green space (formerly LaSalle Park) is in the midst of a $110 million metamorphosis born from the community-driven Imagine LaSalle initiative.
The park offers waterfront panoramas, winding trails for walking and cycling, and various recreational options. Looking for a scenic stroll? This is your perfect jumping-off point for canal walkway adventures, offering gorgeous views of both the water and Buffalo's skyline. Just ten minutes from downtown, it's one of Buffalo's largest waterfront parks.
A Park in Transformation
The ongoing redesign includes a new resilient shoreline that's as practical as it is ecological - creating habitats for local wildlife while helping reduce flood risks. This thoughtful enhancement will open up new ways to experience Lake Erie, including a safe zone for launching small watercraft.
Connectivity is getting a major upgrade too, with a striking new pedestrian bridge designed by Schlaich Bergermann Partner. This architectural addition will span Interstate 190, seamlessly linking the city to the park and making it more accessible for nearby neighborhoods.
What You Can Enjoy Now
Don't wait for the renovation to finish - Ralph Wilson Park already offers plenty to do. Sports enthusiasts can make use of the swimming pool, soccer fields, and baseball diamonds scattered across the grounds.
Dog parents will appreciate the thoughtfully designed dog park with separate sections for small and large four-legged friends. Planning a gathering? The barbecue areas provide perfect spots for family picnics or casual get-togethers. Local skaters regularly hit up the skate park, which has become something of a neighborhood hub.
Coming Soon
The reimagined park will feature a Great Lawn with gentle rolling topography - a flexible space where you can stroll, picnic, or even go sledding in winter months.
Nature lovers will appreciate the planned addition of around 2,000 new trees, bringing more shade, wind protection, and seasonal color to the landscape. Sports facilities are getting comprehensive upgrades, and kids will delight in the new Play Garden drawing inspiration from Buffalo's industrial heritage and Great Lakes ecology.
The dated splash pad is also set for a complete modernization as renovations continue.
Looking Forward
Expanded pedestrian and bike paths will connect the park to regional and statewide trail networks, making it more accessible than ever.
When complete in late 2025, Ralph Wilson Park will connect the regional waterfront with the diverse neighborhoods that surround it, enhancing public space in Western New York.
