About the Location

Historic Design

South Park is a 156-acre public park designed in 1894 by Frederick Law Olmsted as part of Buffalo's park system. It features a picturesque 22-acre lake with three densely planted islands, flanked by gently rolling meadows.

The park is encircled by a circuit drive and network of footpaths, making it perfect for leisurely strolls or jogs.

Natural Features

Originally intended as an arboretum, South Park contains over 2,300 species of trees, shrubs, and plants. This impressive collection makes it a haven for nature enthusiasts and botanists.

A notable feature is the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens, housed in a large Victorian-style conservatory building constructed in 1898. This tri-domed glass structure, designed by Lord & Burnham Company, stands at the park's main entrance off South Park Avenue.

Recreational Opportunities

In the early 20th century, additions to the park included a nine-hole golf course, which occupies much of the area surrounding the lake.

Other recreational facilities were added over time, including ball fields and tennis courts. The park also contains a picnic grove and children's playground area.

Community Significance

South Park serves as a significant green space in Buffalo's southern region, providing residents with opportunities for recreation, nature appreciation, and community gatherings.

It continues to be an important part of Buffalo's historic Olmsted-designed park system, albeit with some changes from its original design.
