About the Location

A Slice of Germany in Buffalo

Tucked away at the intersection of Niagara Street, Busti Avenue, and Hampshire Street sits Dortmund Park - a small but charming greenspace that might not catch your eye at first glance. This little park actually holds significant meaning as it celebrates Buffalo's sister city relationship with Dortmund, Germany, a friendship that's been going strong for over four decades now.

Don't let its modest size fool you. Despite its modest size, the park has a distinct character. Locals often describe it as a tranquil space - a pocket of calm amidst the urban environment.

A Fresh Start

Back in 2018, Mayor Byron W. Brown unveiled plans for a $150,000 makeover to transform what was once just a simple greenspace into the official Dortmund Park we see today. The vision? To create a space that truly embodies the spirit of friendship between Buffalo and its German counterpart.

While you won't find elaborate attractions here, the clean, well-kept grounds reflect the ongoing maintenance of this cultural tribute. The simplicity of the space has its own appeal.

Taking a Breather

The park is a peaceful retreat for locals looking to escape the busy Niagara Street corridor, if only for a moment. Its proximity to the Niagara River makes it an ideal pit stop if you're exploring Buffalo's waterfront areas and need a quick break.

The open, grassy areas are excellent for spreading out a blanket for picnics or just lounging with a good book. There's something refreshingly unpretentious about this space - a calm spot to catch your breath in the middle of the city.

Neighborhood Favorite

Despite flying under the radar for tourists, Dortmund Park has carved out its place in local hearts. You'll often spot dog walkers making their rounds, while the shaded spots provide perfect perches for neighbors catching up or people simply watching the world go by.

It may not be the largest or most elaborate park in Buffalo, but Dortmund Park offers a green retreat while representing the international friendship between Buffalo and Dortmund.
