About Ambrosini Field in New York
Ambrosini Field is a 2.9-acre park located in the northeastern Bronx, specifically on City Island. It serves as the only public field complex and playground on the island, making it a central recreational space for both residents and visitors.
The park is named after Anthony Abraham Ambrosini (1926-1994), who was an inspirational coach and prominent member of the City Island community. Situated at the intersection of City Island Avenue, Centre Street, and Winter Street, Ambrosini Field offers a variety of recreational opportunities.
The front area of the park features a playground equipped with benches, safety surfacing, and chain link fencing. The play equipment includes slides, a flexible bridge, and a large tic-tac-toe board. Behind the playground lies a large field with bleachers and a baseball field, which is home to the City Island Little League.
One of the notable features of Ambrosini Field is a concrete wall adorned with a mural. The mural depicts a swimming girl, a sunset, fish, turtles, crabs, and a stork, celebrating City Island's historical and geographic connection to the sea. Additionally, an area behind the school building contains basketball courts and more play equipment.
In 2008, Ambrosini Field underwent a significant reconstruction. The $1.8 million project, funded by the Department of Environmental Protection's Croton Filtration Plant Mitigation Fund, included the installation of new play equipment, swings, a spray shower, and an adult exercise unit. The two existing baseball fields were also renovated as part of this project.
