About the Location
A Community's Heart
Tucked away in the northeastern Bronx on City Island, Ambrosini Field spans 2.9 acres of precious recreational space. As the island's only public field complex and playground, it's not just a park - it's where community happens.
Named after Anthony Abraham Ambrosini (1926-1994), a treasured coach and community figure whose legacy lives on through this space, the field sits at the intersection of City Island Avenue, Centre Street, and Winter Street. The location offers views of the surrounding area - a pleasant backdrop while watching children play or during weekend baseball games.
Play and Recreation Spaces
The front section houses a modest playground with benches, safety surfacing, and protective fencing. Little ones can enjoy slides, cross a flexible bridge, or challenge friends to a game on the large tic-tac-toe board. While not huge, the playground works well for children around 5-8 years old who need to stretch their legs and imagination.
Behind this play area stretches a larger field featuring bleachers and two baseball diamonds where the City Island Little League makes memories each season. On game days, cheers echo across the field as neighbors gather to support local teams.
If basketball's more your speed, head to the area behind the school building where basketball courts and additional play equipment await.
Art Meets Nature
One of the field's most charming features is a concrete wall transformed by a mural that celebrates City Island's maritime connection. The artwork portrays a swimming girl, sunset hues, and various sea creatures including fish, turtles, crabs, and a stork - a colorful reminder of the island's deep relationship with the waters surrounding it.
Recent Refresh
In 2008, Ambrosini Field got a much-needed makeover. Thanks to $1.8 million from the Department of Environmental Protection's Croton Filtration Plant Mitigation Fund, the park now boasts new play equipment, swings, a refreshing spray shower for hot summer days, and an adult exercise unit for grown-ups wanting to stay active.
The baseball fields also received attention during this renovation, ensuring better play for local teams.
Good to Know
No public restrooms are available here, so plan accordingly. During off-season months, locals sometimes use the area as an impromptu dog run, however you should check current regulations about pets before bringing your four-legged friends.
If you're visiting in summer, toss some bug spray in your bag - the mosquitoes can be quite enthusiastic about joining your park experience.
