The park is bounded by Dawson and Beck Streets, and Intervale and Longwood Avenues. It is named after William F. Rainey (1920-1985), an African-American community leader and veteran of World War II who was instrumental in the park's development.
Originally, the area where the park now stands was intended for residential development. However, community efforts led by William F. Rainey successfully converted it into a public recreational space. The park was posthumously renamed in his honor, recognizing his significant contributions to the local community.
