About the Location

Scenic Waterfront Location

Gantry Plaza State Park is a 12-acre state park located on the East River in the Hunters Point section of Long Island City, Queens, New York City. The park offers spectacular views of the midtown Manhattan skyline, including iconic landmarks such as the Empire State Building and the United Nations headquarters.

Industrial Heritage

The park's most prominent features are the restored gantries, which are remnants of the area's industrial past. These large structures were once used to load and unload rail car floats and barges that served industries on Long Island via the Long Island Rail Road's North Shore Freight Branch.

Today, these gantries stand as striking reminders of the waterfront's history and serve as a unique backdrop for visitors.

Park Features

Gantry Plaza State Park comprises several distinct areas, including an expansive waterfront esplanade, manicured gardens, and four public piers extending into the East River. The park's design incorporates both modern amenities and historical elements, creating a space that honors the area's past while serving the recreational needs of the present-day community.

Notable Landmarks

A notable landmark within the park is the 120-foot-long, 60-foot-high Pepsi-Cola sign. This ruby-colored neon sign, originally located atop a nearby bottling plant, was dismantled and reassembled in a permanent location within the park in 2009.

The sign was designated a New York City landmark in 2016, further cementing its significance to the area's cultural heritage.

Community Value

The park serves as a popular destination for both tourists and local residents, offering a variety of activities and a peaceful retreat from the bustling city. Its location in one of New York City's fastest-growing neighborhoods has made it an integral part of the community, providing much-needed green space and recreational opportunities for millions of locals.
