About Louis Valentino, Jr. Park and Pier

History and Origins

Spanning 6.34 acres, this waterfront park came to life in 1996 when the City's Economic Development Corporation built it, before it officially joined the city parks family in 1999.

Before becoming the peaceful retreat we know today, this spot was part of Red Hook's bustling shipping scene. In the 19th century, this neighborhood wasn't just any port - it was one of the nation's premier shipping hubs.

You're actually standing on quite significant historical ground here. This was once the site of Fort Defiance during the American Revolution. Back in 1776, this represented the westernmost position in George Washington's strategy to keep the British from taking New York City.

A Meaningful Memorial

The park bears the name of Louis J. Valentino, Jr. (1958-1996), a dedicated firefighter and Parks lifeguard who embodied true heroism in his commitment to saving lives.

Valentino made the ultimate sacrifice on February 5, 1996, when he lost his life while searching for injured fellow firefighters during a three-alarm fire in an illegal garage in Flatlands.

Scenic Waterfront Features

The pier stretches into the Buttermilk Channel and offers excellent views of New York Harbor.

From here, you can take in unobstructed views of the Statue of Liberty, Governor's Island, Manhattan's skyline, and Staten Island. The pier is particularly nice at sunset as the day's last light illuminates the city.

This spot provides one of the closest and most direct views of Lady Liberty from land in NYC. At night, the illuminated statue stands out against the city lights.

Recreational Opportunities

The park provides a quiet space with its green areas and waterfront setting.

It's well-suited for spreading out a blanket for picnics, taking leisurely walks, or simply sitting to enjoy the harbor views. During summer, the Red Hook Boaters run free kayaking sessions (typically Thursdays and Sundays) - a wonderful way to experience the harbor from a different perspective.

There's a small beach area where both you and your four-legged friends can dip your toes (or paws) in the water. The park is notably dog-friendly, with plenty of space for pets to run around and even swim.

Fishing and Events

Fishing enthusiasts flock to the pier to cast their lines for various eastern coast fish species that call these waters home.

During the year, the park comes alive with community gatherings - from occasional outdoor movie screenings and music performances to the annual regatta organized by Pioneer Works.

Nearby Amenities

Note that the park itself has minimal facilities (no restrooms), but just outside the entrance you can find Steve's Key Lime Pie, a local treasure worth trying.

The surrounding Red Hook neighborhood offers plenty of charming dining spots, craft breweries, and unique shops within easy walking distance, making it simple to turn your park visit into a full day of Brooklyn exploration.
