Location and Boundaries

Located in Brooklyn's East Flatbush neighborhood, Paerdegat Park occupies a full city block. It's framed by Foster Avenue to the north, Albany Avenue to the east, Farragut Road to the south, and East 40th Street to the west - providing a good amount of space for local residents.

Name Origin

Ever wondered about that unique name? The park takes after Paerdegat Basin, a 1.25-mile channel connecting to Jamaica Bay between Bergen Beach and Canarsie. There's a bit of Dutch history here - "Paerdegat" comes from "paardengat," which literally means "horse gate." A little linguistic souvenir from New York's early days.

Park Amenities

This neighborhood park offers several amenities for its size. You'll find basketball and handball courts, and a multipurpose baseball/soccer field used for both casual play and weekend games. The playground equipment is divided into two areas - one for children under 5 and another for older kids.

The playgrounds include toddler swings, jungle gyms, and a splash pad that's particularly popular with children during summer months. Within the park, you'll find picnic tables and benches for relaxing, including some with built-in chess tables for impromptu matches.
