About Bowne Park

Historic Origins

Located in the Broadway-Flushing neighborhood of Queens, Bowne Park spans 11.79 acres of green tranquility amid the urban landscape. Bordered by 29th and 32nd Avenues and stretching from 155th to 159th Street, this park holds a rich history dating back nearly two centuries.

Long before joggers circled its paths, this land served as the summer getaway for Walter Bowne, a former State Senator and New York City Mayor. His summer residence, affectionately named "Clifton," stood here from around 1825 until a fire claimed the mansion in March 1925. Just months after the blaze, the City acquired the property, and by 1935, it had transformed into an official playground under the Parks Department's care.

Natural Features

At the heart of Bowne Park is a kettle pond, an oval-shaped freshwater feature spanning 1-2 acres. During your visit, you'll likely spot turtles sunning themselves on rocks and various fish swimming beneath the surface. The pond draws a charming array of waterfowl - ducks and geese often make themselves at home here. Two water fountains not only help keep the pond clean but add a soothing soundtrack to your visit. A concrete retaining wall encircles this peaceful water feature, creating an excellent spot to pause and breathe.

Near the water's edge stand two 50-foot weeping willows with a long history. During spring and summer, their cascading branches create a beautiful canopy that's worth seeing in person.

Around the park, you'll walk among an impressive collection of trees, including old-growth forest dominated by stately oak trees with roots reaching back to at least the late 19th century. Graceful American elms add to the diverse canopy. Gently curving paths wind through this urban forest, lined with benches and lighting that make evening strolls both safe and pleasant.

Park Amenities

For families with kids, the modern playground offers a welcome spot for little ones to burn energy on age-appropriate climbing equipment and swings. When summer temperatures climb, the popular splash pad becomes the neighborhood's favorite cooling station.

If you're feeling competitive, check out the basketball court or challenge a friend to a match at the bocce courts. The chess tables invite strategic thinkers to settle in for a game or two. Clean restrooms are available near the playground - just keep in mind they typically close earlier than the park itself.

Throughout Bowne Park, you can find plenty of benches tucked into quiet corners - ideal for diving into a good book, practicing mindfulness, or simply watching the world go by. While there aren't formal picnic tables or grills, the open grassy areas provide plenty of space to spread out a blanket for an impromptu picnic.

Community Use

Bowne Park is a popular neighborhood gathering place. On any given day, you might see local residents jogging along the paths, walking their dogs, or enjoying family time together. The peaceful atmosphere offers a nice break from city life without having to leave the city.

Summer brings the park to life as families cool off at the splash pad and children delight in feeding the ducks and turtles that call the pond home. The pathway circling the pond creates a perfect short walking loop for those looking to stretch their legs without venturing too far.

Park Development

In 1969, Bowne Park pioneered urban recreation by becoming the first city park to feature an "instant playground" with ready-made modular equipment. Since then, the park has evolved through several renovations, with major upgrades in 1994 and 2017. Most recently, a 2023 renovation focused on improving the pond's water quality and refreshing the park's plaza and bocce courts.

Community Involvement

Behind the scenes, the Bowne Park Civic Association has been championing this green space since 1979. This dedicated group advocates not just for the park but for the surrounding neighborhoods as well, helping ensure this cherished community space continues to thrive for generations to come.
