About Seton Park
Location and Setting
Located in the Riverdale section of the Bronx, Seton Park spreads across a generous 35 acres of green space. It sits right near New York City's border with Mount Vernon, with East 233rd Street to the north, Baychester Avenue to the west, Crawford Avenue and Marolla Place to the south, and Pratt Avenue to the southeast.
The park is open daily from 6AM to 10PM, making it accessible for locals looking to spend time in this peaceful neighborhood green space.
Historical Background
Before becoming the lush green space it is today, this land has quite a story to tell. Back in the mid-1970s, Seton Park was officially established, but the site's history goes deeper. From 1895 to 1955, it was home to Seton Hospital, a tuberculosis facility run by the Sisters of Charity.
After the hospital closed its doors, the land sat vacant for years until it was transformed into the park we know today.
Name Origin
Wondering about the name? Seton Park honors Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton (1774-1821), who holds the distinction of being the first American-born saint of the Roman Catholic Church. She wasn't just any historical figure - Seton made her mark through dedicated work in social services and education, including founding the first Catholic girls' school in the United States.

Natural Features
Rattlesnake Brook winds its way through the park, adding a touch of natural beauty to the landscape. Along the brook, you'll come across a modest artificial waterfall created by damming the creek - nothing spectacular, but certainly a pleasant spot to pause and enjoy.
Despite what the name might suggest, you won't need to watch your step for rattlesnakes - they were eradicated from the area back in the early 20th century!
Biodiversity
The park features notable ecological diversity, with oak-hickory forests covering the higher elevations and cattail marshes, sedge meadows, and floodplain forests lining the creek. This variety of habitats attracts over 30 bird species, making the park a surprisingly good spot for birdwatching right in the Bronx.
In recent years, community stewardship programs have added new trees to the park, further enhancing both its natural beauty and ecological value.
Recreational Facilities
Looking to stay active? Seton Park offers a range of well-maintained facilities. The tennis courts rarely get overcrowded, a rarity in NYC that local players definitely appreciate.
Sports fans will find baseball fields with artificial turf, multiple basketball courts, and a spacious soccer field - all kept in good condition. If you prefer mental exercise, grab a seat at one of the chess tables and challenge a friend.
Playgrounds and Climbing Features
If you're visiting with kids, you'll find multiple playground areas designed with different age groups in mind. There's a section specifically for toddlers and equipment suited for older children, so everyone from tiny tots to pre-teens can find something engaging.
One of the park's standout features is its relatively new rock climbing wall, which has quickly become a hit with visitors. For more climbing fun, check out the two huge climbing rocks - a unique feature you won't find in many other NYC parks.
Specialized Recreation Areas
Seton Park keeps up with modern recreational trends. The recently added skate park replaced an older basketball court yard and has become a popular spot for local skaters. There's also a bike and scooter track that's fun for riders of all ages.
Dog owners can let their furry friends run free in the dedicated dog run, which thoughtfully includes separate areas for small and large dogs - though be aware that maintenance here can be a bit hit-or-miss.
Amenities
When you need a break, the park offers clean, well-maintained restrooms and a designated eating area with picnic tables meant for lunch or snacks.
All year long, Seton Park hosts community events that bring neighbors together. During summer months, you can catch outdoor movie screenings featuring films displayed on a large screen under the stars.
Recent Improvements
Seton Park has seen some significant upgrades in recent years. The baseball fields got a makeover in 2019, and early 2025 brought a $4.59 million capital project that added several new features including the skate park, bike track, and climbing features.
These additions weren't random - they were carefully designed to appeal to people of all ages and fitness levels. The park now also includes outdoor fitness equipment specifically for adults, making it easier for everyone in the community to stay healthy and active.
