About Vinmont Veteran Park

A Slice of Bronx History

Situated in Riverdale's corner of The Bronx, Vinmont Veteran Park spans 3.5 acres of green space, functioning as both a community gathering spot and a tribute to local veterans who served in past wars.

The park's story begins in the mid-1940s, when New York City acquired the land through condemnation in 1945 and 1947. When it officially opened on September 26, 1951, locals knew it simply as P.S. 81 Playground because of the school next door. It wasn't until November 1986 that it officially became Vinmont Veteran Park through local legislation.

Wondering about that unique name? "Vinmont" comes from the surrounding neighborhood and nearby Vinmont Road, both named after Robert C. Weinberg - an architect and city planner who designed both the private development and the road serving it.

Play Ball! Sports and Recreation

The crown jewel of the park is undoubtedly Sid Augarten Field, a baseball diamond honoring Sid Augarten (1927-1971), who dedicated a decade of his life as commissioner and president of the North Riverdale Baseball League. The league still calls this field home today and has been responsible for its maintenance since 1993.

In 2013, the field got a complete makeover, emerging with fresh natural turf, new entry gates, better fencing, accessible seating, proper dugouts, an updated backstop, and drinking fountains for thirsty athletes.

Kid-Friendly Spaces

If you're bringing little ones, you're in luck. The park features three distinct play zones designed with different age groups in mind. You can find multiple slides, a sandbox for budding architects, toddler swings for the smallest visitors, and regular swings where older kids can soar.

On those sticky New York summer days, the sprinkler area becomes the neighborhood's favorite cooling station. What's especially nice is how the playground catches afternoon shade, making summer play more comfortable. Parents and caregivers appreciate the open layout that makes it easy to keep an eye on adventurous children no matter which play structure they're exploring.

Evolving with the Community

Like any good public space, Vinmont Veteran Park hasn't remained static. The early 1990s brought new fencing, curbs, benches, picnic tables, landscape improvements, water fountains, and an updated backstop for the baseball field.

A decade later in 2002, the park saw further enhancements with better play equipment for children of all ages, the addition of painted Potsy and Nations games (bringing some old-school New York play to new generations), a rebuilt spray shower area, and fresh plantings to keep the space green and vibrant.

Natural Charm and Practical Amenities

Nature lovers will appreciate the park's woodland area featuring native trees. Red and white oaks stand alongside black cherry and sweetgum trees, while Norway maple, black locust, American elm, pignut hickory, and redtwig dogwood add to the diverse canopy.

On the practical side, you'll discover public restrooms open during daylight hours, convenient parking options nearby, and plenty of benches where you can sit and take in the scenery. The natural cooling effect of all those trees makes this spot a refreshing escape, even on warmer days.

With its blend of athletic facilities, play spaces, natural areas, and historical significance, Vinmont Veteran Park gives Riverdale residents a peaceful retreat for both active recreation and quiet contemplation - a place that honors the past while being useful for today's community.
