About Maria Hernandez Park
Location and History
Found in the heart of Bushwick, Brooklyn, Maria Hernandez Park functions as a green oasis spanning 6.87 acres. The park sits neatly bordered by Knickerbocker Avenue, Irving Avenue, Starr Street, and Suydam Street. If you're coming by subway, you're in luck - the Jefferson Street station on the L line puts you just steps away.
The park wasn't always known by its current name. Originally called Bushwick Park, it was renamed in 1989 to honor a true local hero - Maria Hernandez. Maria was a community activist who fearlessly stood against drug activity in the neighborhood, dedicating herself to creating a safer Bushwick. Tragically, her advocacy cost her life when she was killed in her Starr Street home. Today, her spirit lives on in this vibrant community space, with many locals expressing genuine appreciation for how her work transformed the area into a place everyone can enjoy.
Facilities and Amenities
This park isn't just a patch of grass - it received significant renovations between 2016 and 2022.
The modern upgrades have brought some serious perks: freshly renovated basketball and handball courts, outdoor fitness equipment for those looking to skip the gym membership, a performance stage for community events, and a colorful playground featuring a rainbow-colored water feature that transforms into a refreshing splash pad during those sweltering summer months. On any given day, you'll find the playground area alive with the laughter of kids of all ages.
Sports enthusiasts will appreciate the volleyball courts, soccer field, and skate park where local teens often show off impressive tricks. For those who prefer a more leisurely pace, a walking trail loops around the park for about 400 meters (1/3 mile) - well-suited for a casual stroll or a quick jog.
The park accommodates visitors of all ages, from toddlers to seniors - and your four-legged friends have spaces too, with both large and small dog runs that include water sources during summer. When nature calls (the human kind), you can find clean restrooms centrally located, including baby changing stations for the smallest visitors.
Community and Culture
The circular plaza often functions as an impromptu gathering space, while scattered benches under shady trees offer quiet moments of respite from city life.
The park hums with cultural diversity, with a notable Latino influence that adds to its vibrant character. Weekends bring the space to life - impromptu soccer matches unfold on the field, intense basketball games draw small crowds, and skateboarders navigate their wooden terrain. Summer elevates everything with cultural festivals, outdoor movie nights under the stars, and a popular Saturday Farmers' Market where local vendors showcase everything from fresh produce to artisanal crafts.
Many locals use the park not just for recreation, but as a place to connect with neighbors and enjoy community events. In spring, the park puts on its finest display when flowering trees burst into bloom - keep an eye out for the cherry blossoms, Linden, and Yellowwood trees that add splashes of color to the landscape.
