About the Location

Riverside Retreat & Natural Beauty

Located in the Bronx, Spuyten Duyvil Shorefront Park is a 6.6-acre park that feels worlds away from city life. This hidden pocket of green provides excellent views of the Hudson River, Spuyten Duyvil Creek, and the arch of the Henry Hudson Bridge spanning the waters below.

The landscaping has created a small wildlife sanctuary within New York City. As you walk the pathways, you'll see views of Inwood and the Palisades rising across the river.

A Victory for the Community

This tranquil space almost never existed. Opened in 1994, the park exists thanks to local residents who spent decades fighting to preserve this shoreline.

A Birdwatcher's Delight

If you're into birdwatching, bring your binoculars! The park is a hotspot for diverse bird species that breed nearby or stop over during migration. You might spot snowy and yellow egrets, green and black-crowned night-herons, ring-necked pheasants, mallards, and spotted and solitary sandpipers.

The vegetation creates a forest-like environment where small mammals find habitat. Don't be surprised if you spot rabbits and other woodland creatures just steps into the park!

Small but Mighty

Though you can walk through this compact park in about 5-10 minutes, there's something special about its intimate scale. It feels noticeably removed from the city's noise and activity. Many visitors comment on how peaceful it feels - a true escape without leaving the city.

You'll notice how clean and well-maintained the park is compared to many other city green spaces. The paths are deliberately rustic and rocky, enhancing the natural feel, however this might pose challenges if you have mobility concerns.

Finding Your Way

There are several entrances along Edsall Avenue, including a large gate near the train station parking lot. First-timers might need to look a bit more carefully to spot these access points.

If you're driving, just be aware that the surrounding roads are quite narrow despite accommodating two-way traffic. Take it slow, especially when sharing the road with larger vehicles like trucks and buses.
