About Reverend T. Wendell Foster Park in New York
Rev. T. Wendell Foster Park is a community park located in the Bronx, New York City. The park is situated on East 164th Street and River Avenue, near Yankee Stadium. It was formerly known as Mullaly Park and was renamed in 2021 to honor Reverend T. Wendell Foster, a civil rights advocate and the first Black elected city official in the Bronx.
The park's history dates back to 1924 when the city acquired the land. It was developed as a multi-use recreational facility complementing the nearby Macombs Dam Park. Over the years, the park has expanded and evolved to meet the changing needs of the community.
In recent years, the park has undergone significant renovations and improvements. In 2021, the recreation center was renovated with a new indoor basketball court, dance room, and library. The park also features some of the largest ramps in the NYC Parks system, making it a popular destination for skateboarders, rollerbladers, and BMX riders since its establishment as a skate park in 1988.
The park offers a variety of recreational facilities for visitors of all ages. It includes playgrounds, sports fields, and areas for relaxation. The park's location near Yankee Stadium makes it a convenient spot for local residents and baseball fans alike to enjoy outdoor activities.
In 2024, local officials announced a $4 million investment for further renovations to the park's facilities, particularly focusing on upgrading the skate park area. This investment aims to preserve the park's cultural heritage while providing inclusive recreational opportunities for the community.
