Mill Pond Park stretches across 11.57 acres along the Harlem River in the Bronx, offering a peaceful waterfront escape that opened in 2009. This green space was actually created to replace parkland sacrificed for the construction of the new Yankee Stadium (baseball fans, take note!). The name isn't random - it honors the area's industrial roots, where a dam once powered local mills during the 18th and 19th centuries. Before becoming the lovely park it is today, this land was part of the Bronx Terminal Market.

The park balances active recreation with quieter spaces, featuring tennis courts, picnic spots, and a waterfront walkway with some truly gorgeous views of the Harlem River and Manhattan skyline. Tennis enthusiasts will appreciate the 16 Deco Turf tennis courts - yes, the same surface used at the U.S. Open! During winter, some courts get covered with a bubble so you can keep your tennis game strong year-round. A little insider tip: these courts are typically easier to reserve than the perpetually-booked ones in Central Park.

The park is home to the renovated Power House, a 25,800-square-foot building housing restrooms, a café, and other amenities. You'll discover the park well-maintained, with two bathroom facilities conveniently positioned - one near the museum and another by the tennis courts.

Fancy a cookout? The dedicated grilling area comes equipped with built-in grills and picnic tables. Just be aware that this gravel-covered section fills up quickly on nice days, especially weekends and holidays, so arriving early is your best bet if you're planning to barbecue.

Within the park, you'll notice design elements that nod to its industrial heritage, like repurposed pier structures. The sunset views from the waterfront are particularly spectacular - an ideal backdrop for evening relaxation.

New and Improved

In 2024, Mill Pond Park expanded by an additional 2.8 acres, bringing exciting new features to the community. The expansion includes a modern children's playground with equipment for various age groups, an adult fitness area for those looking to work out, and more waterfront access. On hot summer days, the splash pad provides welcome relief with sprinklers that kids absolutely love. These additions make the park more appealing for families.

Natural Elements

Various waterfowl, including geese and ducks, frequent the waterfront, and some visitors have even spotted small crabs near the water's edge.
