About Columbus Park
A Piece of Living History
Tucked between Baxter, Worth, Bayard, and Mulberry Streets in the heart of Manhattan's Chinatown, Columbus Park sits on what was once one of 19th century New York's most notorious slums. We find it fascinating how urban spaces transform over time - this one began as Mulberry Bend Park before being renamed Columbus Park in 1911. It was the brainchild of Calvert Vaux (yes, the same genius behind Central Park) who designed it in the 1880s hoping to breathe new life into a struggling neighborhood.
From Then to Now
When the park opened in 1897, it featured gentle curved walkways, benches, and an open grassy area - pretty standard fare for the time. But like the city itself, Columbus Park hasn't stayed frozen in amber. Over the decades, it's evolved with the community around it.
In 2006, the park got a major facelift that included adding a synthetic turf playing field and restoring the historic pavilion. Today, it strikes a nice balance between spaces for active recreation and quiet relaxation - something increasingly precious in our busy city.
A Cultural Crossroads
What really makes Columbus Park special is its role as a gathering place for the local Chinese community. Drop by on any weekend and you'll find a vibrant cultural scene that contrasts with the surrounding Manhattan streets.
The park comes alive with groups practicing tai chi in synchronized motion, intense matches of mahjong and Chinese chess, and impromptu performances of Chinese music and opera. Mornings bring the graceful movements of tai chi practitioners, while afternoons fill with the distinctive sounds of traditional Chinese instruments, creating a unique atmosphere you won't find anywhere else in the city.

Recreation for Everyone
Beyond its cultural significance, Columbus Park offers plenty of recreational options. The synthetic turf field hosts continuous games of soccer, volleyball, and basketball throughout the day, with multiple goal posts available for soccer players.
Kids have their own space too - a well-kept playground with swings and jungle gym equipment, plus a splash pad that's a lifesaver during New York's sweltering summer days. The ping pong tables attract players of all ages and skill levels, from curious beginners to impressive veterans.
If you're looking to get a workout in, you'll appreciate the exercise equipment and open areas for bodyweight fitness. The park efficiently accommodates many different activities within a relatively compact space.
Community Space
Columbus Park reflects New York's urban renewal story and the importance of public spaces in densely populated areas. Many elderly Chinese residents gather here daily to connect, play games, and maintain cultural traditions.
This creates a multigenerational space where cultural knowledge passes between age groups and can be observed by interested visitors. The community atmosphere provides a glimpse into everyday life different from typical tourist attractions.
Good to Know
The park includes public restrooms that typically close in the early evening. You'll discover plenty of benches and tables scattered throughout - perfect spots to take a break or enjoy some takeout from the amazing restaurants just steps away in Chinatown.
During summer, the mature trees provide welcome shaded areas where you can sit and watch the fascinating tapestry of community life that makes Columbus Park such a special corner of New York City.
