Found in the heart of Brooklyn, Fort Greene Park spans 30.2 acres of leafy sanctuary with a story that stretches back to America's earliest days. As Brooklyn's first official park (established 1847), this green space began life as Fort Putnam, a Revolutionary War fortification later renamed to honor General Nathanael Greene. In 1867, the legendary duo Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux - yes, the same visionaries behind Central Park - reimagined the space into the rolling landscape we enjoy today.

Nature and Monuments on the Hill

Wander through the park and you'll discover winding paths that curve around gentle hills, open lawns ideal for lazy afternoon lounging, and a canopy of mature trees including a magnificent 135-year-old English elm that's seen generations of Brooklynites come and go.

Perched at the highest point stands the Prison Ship Martyrs' Monument - a solemn 149-foot Doric column topped with a bronze urn. It's not just an impressive landmark; it's a powerful memorial to more than 11,500 American prisoners of war who died aboard British prison ships during the Revolutionary War. Their remains rest in a crypt beneath the plaza, which, by the way, offers some pretty spectacular views of both the Manhattan and Brooklyn skylines.

The park hosts a variety of community events throughout the year. Year-round, you might catch jazz concerts, outdoor movies under the stars, or the thoughtful words of writers at the Fort Greene Park Summer Literary Festival.

Saturdays bring the bustling Farmers' Market (9am to 4pm), where you can browse fresh produce and artisanal foods, while an adjacent artisan market showcases unique handmade goods from local and international creators.

When the weather warms, Soul Summit turns parts of the park into a community dance party with house music that brings neighbors together.

A Dog Lover's Paradise
